I have been asked by my niece to be the Godfather of her and her husband’s child. My mother says it was tradition when she was growing up for the Godfather to make a donation to the Priest who performed the baptism. Should I do this? What is expected today? The baptism will be done during a regular Sunday Mass tomorrow, September 2, 2007.

Thanks.

Jeff

20 or 25 $$ is usually given to the priest by the parents, but it is never required.

I think that may be a tradition within your family, but not necessitated by the Church.

We always gave just to give him a donation, but to my knowledge it’s not a requirement by the Church. God Bless and congratualtions on being a Godfather.
