I know it’s too late for this question but I just wanted to hear what your opinion was. Our baby is getting baptized in the morning and we have a problem. I washed the baptism outfit cause it was a little yellowed from being in storage and I thought I would add a little bleach to it, well now it is a lot yellow and looks terrible!!! I called all around and none of the stores that sell baptism dresses open until 11:00am. The baptism starts at 11:30am so I do not have enough time to go way over there and get one. So what I did was go to Walmart and buy a pretty pale pink dress with a white long sleeve sweater over it. What do you think about this? I didn’t know what else to do. Do you think we will be frowned upon? Thanks for your opinions!

If it were me I would go to Walmart and find anything that looked nice and was white.

I did go to Walmart and they had absolutely nothing that was white. Not even a nice white sleeper. That is why I bought the pink dress. Thank you though!

Well I guess if that is your only option Christ I am sure will see the soul of his new member and not pick at the color. Most parishes have the white garment they put on the baby anyway. As far as the others that will be there I would not let it bother me. It does not matter what they say anyway.

My mother made my oldest son a beautiful baby-blue baptismal gown for his baptism, I guess knowing full-well that the priest was going to give him a white cloth to symbolize being washed of his original sin.

I’m keeping it in hopes that his son (when he marries and has kids) will be able to pass it down to him on his baptism. 👍

There is no problem wearing any color for baptism. As part of the ritual the baby is given a white garment…for most it is the size of a white bib, which is the symbol of putting on Christ. And white means purity. The parish provides that item. We teach baptism prep, and a white garment is never required but it has become part of the tradition of the sacrament to bring your child already dressed in white.

In adult formation, many times, they come to baptism dressed in darker clothes and after they are baptized they put on a white gown or alb over their clothing to signify also now their sins have been washed clean and they are putting on Christ in the white garment.

Many times, we see children in yellow age faded baptismal gowns that have been handed down from 4,5 and even 10 generations. It is beautiful. Peace and blessings to your family on the baptism of your little one.

It is correct for validity the color of the clothes does not matter. However the symbolism is that a person child (Original) or adult (Original and personal) has sins that are being washed away. so it is always improper to dress the person being Baptized in white before the baptism.

I don’t know about the US, but here in Britain officially only the baptism-blanket that you put over the child during baptism has to be white, and a lot of parents in our church use pink or blue clothes with a white blanket, so HERE it would be absolutely fine…and in Holland (where I was born) too, but where you are it probably depends on what is custom. Personally I think your solution sounds fine! And sorry about the original baptism-dress…How annoying 😦

My nephew had mess his Baptismal Suit with “diaper mess” about an a half hour before Mass. I quickly gave my sister-in-law a little white lace dress (with pink roses) my daughter had in the diaper bag as an extra outfit. We put it on him, with the “boy hat” from his set and off we went. No one said anything. In fact the Priest had quite a chuckle when my SIL explained the strange outfit for her son.

Thanks to all of you for your responses. We ended up wearing the original discolored dress after all and nobody even said a word.It was a beautiful event!! God bless you.

good choice, it probably looked like an heirloom, one of our in-laws had the same experience with a wedding dress, everybody commented how great she looked in the “antique” dress (it was only 20 yrs old). Rit used to have a product for this situation, if you still want to try to restore it.
