We Baptised our son at 6 months old, but never got around to doing the same for our daughter who is now 7. We will be Baptising her this spring as it is a requirement for entry into a Catholic school. This is all very new to me and I have some questions:
  1. what does she wear (we bought her a white dress, but I am unsure of the dress shoe color, should that be white as well? what about tights? should these be worn?)
  2. what do we wear? a dress, a suit, formal, semi-formal?
  3. what are the duties of the Godmother? does she need to do anything besides show up?
  4. what is the protocal after the ceremony? do go out for lunch?
sorry for the 20 questions, I am clueless and want this to be as perfect as possible for her.

Thanks!

What is the consent requirement for a seven year old to be baptized. I assume that is the age of discernment, since that is the age at which many children receive first communion and confession. According to many people on this board, someone this age would need to go through the RCIA program, which could take a year or longer? Maybe there are different rules at different ordinary form faith communities.

At age 7 she is considered an adult by the Church.

She will be baptized, receive her First Communion and Confirmation all at the same time, the Easter Vigil!

Talk to the DRE or director of RCIA, they will instruct you on proper clothes, etc.

Thanks be to God.

At the age of 7 your daughter is no longer considered an infant for the purpose of baptism. She’ll go through RCIA as adapted for children and will be baptized at the Easter Vigil.

Talk with your pastor or RCIA director about how to get started.

all except # 4 should be covered in the pre-baptismal classes parents and godparents will take. #4 is irrelevant, do whatever you want. The requirements for godparent are the same as for your other child, adult Catholic fully initiated, living in harmony with Catholic teaching and practice including Church laws on marriage, and not the parent of the child. The godparent should be around in her life as Christian mentor and assist you in your duty to raise and educate her as a Catholic, and has a special role in the rite of Baptism itself, and is also integral to her preparation for first communion, and should be the Confirmation sponsor when that comes up.

See you parish today, once she is over age 7, which is the “borderline” age of reason, they may expect her to participate in RCIA.

“about 7yo” It is a pastoral decision 7-8? and depends on the maturity of the child.
