Baptism Gift

I’ll start off by saying that I’ve been selected to be the godmother for my baby cousin, and I’m very excited about this. I’m already aware of the responsibilities of a godmother in helping the godchild learn about the faith, but I’m wondering what would be an appropriate Baptism gift from me to the family/child. It’s been eleven years since there was a Baptism in my family, so it’s been awhile since I’ve seen what kinds of gifts people give. I already have some general ideas (we’re Irish-American, so I’m thinking something with a Celtic cross or an Irish prayer on it), but I’d like to hear what other godparents have given their godchildren and their families. For girls I’ve given an ellegant jewelry box with the date, and place of the baptism on it. Childrens books, that begin to teach the child about God. I’ve bought little suits for boys, and pretty dresses for girls to wear to Mass. Later as they grow I’ve given doll sets that are characters in the Bible. They can act out bible stories with them. I’ve given what I call “Mass sets” a group of quiet toys, and books that are interactive, and will occupy them at Mass. I put it into a tote bag, I sew, made of their favorite colors. With the parents cooperation, I tell the child. The tote set is only for Church. That way they look forward to going to Mass, and getting to play with their special toys. Over time we add new things to their totes.

I bought a little silver shell dipper thing that is used by the priest to pour the water over the baby’s head. You could possibly also have it engraved, and also blessed by the the priest so it can become a souvenir for the child.

I also have a practice of saving some of the baptismal water in a bottle after the baptism so I can present it to the kid when they are older. How cool is that?

A crucifix or statue for their bedroom, or a lovely picture of a guardian angel…something memorable. When we were children, we had the picture with the huge beautiful angel watching over the little children crossing a bridge. It was large, good quality, and in a beautiful frame, so it was a focal point in the room, and I still remember it.

Do you have a Catholic Gift/book store near you?

They will have lots of ideas.

Just a few are:
Crucifix for the child’s bedroom
Multicolored wooden rosary
“Nice” rosary to save
Crib cross/medal
Saint medal or book
Almost anything engraved
Saint statue

In the East, we have the tradition that the Godparents give the Godchild a baptismal Cross or Crucifix and perhaps an Icon (image) of the Godchild’s patron saint.

I would always end up buying the christining outfit, also I use to give a medal, if it was a girl she would get earrings. Celtic cross sounds good. I have a hard time finding anything irish, I have to wait when March comes around. It just depends on what u can do. It is a great honor to be a god-parent! Keep us posted

Thanks for the ideas everybody! Right now I’m thinking I want to make a knotted Rosary as something he can use when he’s older (I’m thinking green instead of the typical baby blue for the Irish side of the family ), but I’d also like to add something engraved with his name. I’m thinking either a picture frame or a box, but most of the boxes I’m looking at are described as jewelry boxes and the “perfect gift for her.” Would an engraved box be an appropriate gift for a little boy or is this too feminine? I also found a cute blue and white cross shaped box that I can get personalized with his name, but I like the idea of something I can put a message on.

Depending on the size, a jewelry box could be a Rosary Box. Not at all too feminine. If it is slightly larger, it could be a Prayer Box.

Just my opinion, but unless it really looks like a girls jewelry box, it can be used for a boy.

I bought a box from a craft store, used my wood burning pen to make a border, stained it, and attached a wooden B (my godson’s first initial) to the top. Then I made a green rosary with a Celtic cross. I was pretty happy about the rosary, because it ended up matching the details inside the church, which was a St. Patrick’s. Thanks to everyone who gave me suggestions! Here’s a picture of the box and rosary:
