Hello, everyone. When I was baptized a couple of years ago I wasn’t given a baptism name as I was unaware of the practice at the time. Despite the fact that the time has come and passed would I still be able to choose one?

One’s baptismal name or “Christian name” is usually your given first name. Catholics will sometimes take an additional favorite saint’s name at Confirmation. We can add a devotion to a saint at any point in our lives.

If the priest baptized you without adding any new name, your existing name/s must have been deemed suitable for Baptism. It is your baptismal name.

For Catholics, the rule is that any name not contrary to Catholic morals can be a baptismal name. And really, most names have a patron saint attached to them somewhere. (And then there’s you, at least when just baptized and sinless, right?)

I used to do name research for baptisms at my old parish, and I can look that stuff up for you. Message me privately.

But really, you can always add more middle names to your name. That is your prerogative.

Your baptism name is the name on your birth certificate. I have never heard of a saint’s name being added at baptism. I have asked all my Catholic friends and they have also never heard of such a thing.
