The Council of Trent mentions it…I don’t know if it is mentioned any earlier or not. I’ll try to find the canon from Trent and post it for you.
 
This has always been a belief of the Church. Water is the normative form of baptism but there are exceptional cases in which one can be baptised by blood or desire. Some Early Church Fathers recorded this belief in their writings. Then of course, you have Jesus Himself, telling the thief who was on the cross next to Him that he would be in paradise. There was no water baptism there. These cases are of course, the exception and in no way negate the fact that almost always one must have a water baptism.

There is little to mention more to what you have already said above, but the thought that this was a “natural” belief, considering that the catechumens in the early church were often myrtered before they were baptized in the normal way, but rather baptized “in their own blood,” thus we also have the “baptism of blood.” Surely they believed in Christ, only being instructed in the faith, that God would not enter them into heaven from their own latent desire! Thus the two baptisms, of “desire” and of “blood,” are closely related.
