Actually the liturgical year begins with the first Sunday of Advent. However, the Baptism of the Lord would be a fine time to begin catechesis of your children. We are now in Cycle A.
As to catechesis, you have many more posts than I have, but I am wondering if you are home-schooling your children. As an educator and administrator in Catholic and public schools for over 40 years, I have a problem with home-schooling. What programs are available in your parish? It may be that some of these programs are questionable and under canon law you have the right (Canons 796 & 797) to educate your own children. However, Canon 798 is quite clear on using the Catholic school in your area if you have one.
Fr. David, above, corrected himself about the Baptism of the Lord being part of the Christmas season because it is in the Sacramentary.
I was merely pointing out that present rubrics seem illogical.
