Baptism or Christening?

Where did the term “christening” come from? Is it a Protestant term? My daugher is getting baptized next week but the protestants in my family keep saying “christened”

Can someone shed some light on this for me? Thanks
 
Are your relatives Methodist by chance? Or Baptists even?

The reason I ask, we have some Methodist family members and they call it Christening, my mom, who is Bapist calls it Christening…(I had to correct her :rolleyes: )…

But as far as I know, Presbyterians, Episcopalians and Lutherans call it Baptism…

I don’t know where the term came from, so I’m as interested in this information as much as you are!
 
Christen is a synonym for baptize. It is Old English meaning “to make Christian” and is derived from the anointing with chrism and/or the term Chrisitan, Christos, etc.
