Greetings,

I’m a new father, and recently had my infant son baptized at our local parish. I found the preparation process a bit unfulfilling, as it consisted of a single half-hour meeting.

Our priest is new to the parish, and still finding his footing, so I volunteered to help assist with future efforts. I met with our priest this afternoon, and it was great! I cannot wait to get started.

I’m so encouraged about developing a brief presentation and possible take away materials for parents of young children looking to have them baptized… but I first wanted to check with this forum for possible resources.

Can anyone here share their baptism preparation course content, or possibly share brochures/flyers that they provide to their parishioners? I can’t wait to get started, but want to be sure I’m using the best material possible!

Thank you for your time and consideration!

Love and God Bless!

My husband and I do baptism prep. We talk a little bit about the Sacrament, and what it requires of parents, but I’d say the bulk of our talk is about how to practice and teach the faith with very young children. The parents we talk to really appreciate that, especially since many/most did not come from practicing homes (other than Mass attendance and Sacraments.)

We share a lot of stories about our kids, talk about where we found resources. We have a take home sheet with online resources for parents and kids, as well as info on activities for little kids and parents in our parish and the diocese. We bring some of our faith related children’s books and books for Catholic parents. There’s several about celebrating the liturgical year at home that parents really like - this is the cultural knowledge that’s been lost and they like seeing that they can bring it back.

Maybe some of this can be helpful to you. 🙂

I think one of the nicest ideas I’ve heard is to ask the parents and godparents to write a letter to the child expressing their hopes and dreams about the child’s baptism. It’s something that can be read later as a reminder of the importance of the event. I’ve adapted this for RCIA, asking sponsors and, if appropriate, parents or spouses to write a similar letter as the catechumens are being baptized or candidates are being received into the Church.

Thank you all for the assistance here. Great ideas and resources. I was also pointed in the direction of www.formed.org for materials.

I will proceed forward with developing some course content. Again, your feedback was very helpful.

God Bless,
Nate
