My question to this forum is can a small child be baptized if the parents are not practicing catholics but the grandparents are and would be the godparents?

It will depend on the parish. The parish I’m a member of does allow it.

The requirements for baptism are that the Church be given a “well founded hope” that the child would be raised as a Christian. As long as there is sufficient indication that the grandparents are capable of raising the child as a Catholic and that the parents would not interfere with this, then there should be no problem with proceeding with the baptism. But the final call is up to the local pastor.

I think it would be unusual, though not unheard of. As long as there is a reasonable liklihood that the child would be raised in the faith, it shouldn’t be an issue. I’m assuming here that the parents are giving their consent for this? That does make a difference.

Generally only if the Grandparents have joint or total custody of the child. The Grandparents then generally are considered substitute parents and are presenting the child for Baptism therefore other Godparents should be found.My question to this forum is can a small child be baptized if the parents are not practicing catholics but the grandparents are and would be the godparents?
