Baptism Question

Hi Everyone

A non-Catholic has been asking me about baptism and wanted to know what the outward sign is to which I told him water.

He now wants to know if one is saved or not saved without being baptised by water.

Any comments would be appreciated.

One is saved by baptism. Baptism washes us of our original sin, and if one is an adult it washes away all sins.

However, remember you can lose your salvation. There is no once saved always saved. Our salvation is both faith and works.

So after baptism, to stay saved, one must also try not to sin, go to confession to confess the sins do the pennance given, and partake of the eucharist.
 
Just a small technical correction: baptism doesn’t save anyone. The life, death and resurrection of Jesus makes salvation possible. Baptism joins us to that death and resurrection so that we can be part of salvation. As far as we know (i.e., what has been revealed) is that baptism is necessary for salvation. That baptism is normally of water, but may also be blood or desire.

Thanks Deacon Ed, you are absolutely correct, I was stating it as would be needed for a protestant to understand but you are 1000% correct.
 
The outward sign of baptism is water and the Trinitarian formula. I baptize you in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
But many other signs are also included in the rite, like oils, candle, white garment and the the sign of the cross at the beginning of the rite. It is a very rich sacrament, where the minister is in the Persona of Christ…so Christ is very much present as well.
