I am planning the baptisms of my 4 children. (they are 5, 2, and 3 month old twins) and I was wondering if it would be inappropriate to open an invitation to the parish to join us at the baptism reception. I really love the parish I’m in and it feels like a big family to me (as a convert from being a lone Wiccan practioner the family aspect of the Church is wonderful) I feel that if they are there during the Mass to witness my children being baptized I would feel wrong not to invite them to celebrate with refreshments afterwards.

That is perfectly fine. In fact, the normal way to celebrate Sacraments is with the community. So ideally weddings and baptisms shouldn’t be private ceremonies but the Rites are done during Mass. So why not the celebration afterwards as well?

Thank you for your response. I was hoping it would be ok to invite them, because it feels wrong to me not to. Kinda like recieving a wedding invite that says you can come to the ceremony but not the reception. If that makes sense.

What a lovely idea! Blessings to you and all the family.

are you rich?

I don’t know how many families are in your parish, or how many would attend the reception if you offered an open invitation, but be careful about the expense!

Congratulations to your family for becoming disciples!

In my parish one family has done that twice, each time one of their daughters was baptized, since they have no family in our country and consider the parish family. The reception was held in our meeting room after Mass. Not everyone responded to the invitation, maybe 25% of those present, but because it had been announced in advance, many of their friends had also brought sweets or fruit so there was plenty for everyone. It can be as simple as providing coffee and cake so it need not be outrageously expensive.
