What exactly is the role and responsibilities of a sponsor for an adult being baptised into the Church?

The Sponsor should be choosen by the individual or assigned to an individual at the beginning of the Inquiry stage. Their purpose at this time is to help the individual find answers to questions they may have. They should model the practice of the Catholic faith to them and introduce them to different Catholic terms and practices. They will be with this individual for the entire process, will pray with and meet with them outside of the regular RCIA Catechetical sessions. During the process they will provide insight into the Spiritual progress that the person is making and the difficulties they may be having. At some point they will testify that the person knows and understands what they are undertaking and that they are prepared to live the Catholic Faith. They will help the individual during difficult times and share their joy. It is a life time commitment that does not end at Easter Vigil.
