My daughter is going to be Baptized next month.

I had moved to another country with my wife a few years ago and truth be told I don’t have any Catholic friends here that can act as a sponsor in place of my Godparent (who happens to be my mother ) since she won’t be able to attend.

The priest said that it’s not absolutely necessary that someone represents my Godparent at the Baptism, but it would be good if someone could take on that task if possible.

This was causing me stress as I really want to have my daughter baptized but was worrying that I didn’t have a sponsor present. I would just like to know if this is acceptable or even valid as I thought on the contrary.

You can have people stand as proxies for the godparents. A proxy has to meet the same standards as the godparents (received baptism, Eucharist, confirmation; if married, then married validly according to the Church; practices their faith). Your priest can help you identify people who meet these standards, if you need help finding someone.

That way, you not only have the godparents you wish, but also they’re represented at the baptism.
