Does anyone know if the Catholic church honors a Christian baptism? My husband told me his co-worker said it did,

The Catholic Baptism is the Christian Baptism. If your asking if the Catholics honor non catholic baptism, then I don’t know. It’s a question I’ve been wanting to be answered for a long time. I got baptized in the Baptist Church. When I became Catholic my Priest said that I didn’t have to be re-baptized. About ten years later another Priest said I did. I’ve posted this question on CA with negative results. 🤷🤷🤷

We believe in one Baptism. If a Baptist,Lutheran,Methodist etc.desires to become a Catholic Christian, and they have been validly Baptized and can prove the’ve been Baptized(Baptismal Certificate,Letter from their former Pastor)They are not re-Baptized.CCC#1271.Hope this helps.

If a person is baptised with the correct matter and form; the “matter” is water(either poured or immersed in) while the correct words or “form” of intitution, which come from Jesus’ command in Matt.28:19-20 -“Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.” -The words used today are"I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy Spirit.", when this is done with the intent of doing what Christ taught, then we have a valid baptism. The Catholic Church does honor all valid baptisms because they were given to her to keep and “guard”-1 Tim.6:20- “O Timothy, guard what has been entrusted to you.”

I concur with David. It has to be the proper matter and form. There are some Christian baptisms that are lacking in one or the other. People who have had those need to be baptized in the Trinitarian form and with water. Now, there are some that are not sure and have what is called a conditional baptism in case it wasn’t done properly.

If you mean does the Church recognize baptism by a Protestant community the answer is yes. As long as the baptism was in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit and done with water it is a valid baptism. Many people come into the Catholic Church after having been baptized as a Methodist, Presbyterian, Episcopalian, etc. They are not re-baptized.

If there is any question about whether a baptism was valid, a person can be conditionally baptized to make sure. In that case the priest or deacon says “If you are not already baptized, I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.”
