My daughter has just had a baby and wishes to get him baptised at Christmas in her parish. The babys father is non Catholic but would like their son to be baptised Catholic. They have chosen Mums sister and Dads brother as Godpaernts but his brother is non Catholic and I’m not sure if this is acceptable. If it isn’t is there any way around this that the Uncle could be involved as a Godfather?

He can participate in the baptism ceremony as a “Christian Witness” but cannot be a Godfather. Godparents must beConfirmed, practicing Catholics in good standing with the Church. Only one Godparent in this case a Godmother is all that is required by Canon Law.

Thank you, that makes it clearer. The baby can have a catholic Godmother without having a Godfather, I didn’t know that, I thought two were required.
