Is there any regulation on when infant baptisms should be performed in regard to during Mass, privately after or before Masses on Sunday? Is this up to the preference of the priest and/or Bishop?

From what I understand the Rite of Baptism should only be celebrated once a day. All Sacramental Rites should be celebrated with the Christian community and so if possible Baptism should be celebrated during Mass. However it should not greatly delay or disrupt Mass . So if you have one or two or maybe even three infants to be Baptized they should all be Baptized at the same Mass. If the number is very large 3-4 or more then the Baptisms should take place outside of Mass.

Thanks Bro Rich. Is this documented somewhere? It sounds like in the end it is basically up to the priest’s discretion (if he doesn’t want to extend Mass …??). Thank you.

Dear Elzee,

I believe the decision is up to the parents, depending on their devotional preference. Some are baptized in a private manner shortly after mass, but if there are parents who desire a public celebration, Father limits it to once a month and at a particular Mass time.

I would suggest that you get a copy if the Rite of Baptism. With the new Code of Canon Law many of the minute things regarding celebration of the Sacraments were shifted to each of the Rites instead of being defined in the Code. In the book of Rites there is always an introduction section with a wealth of information on the theology of the Sacrament.
