I do not want to derail a previous thread regarding Baptist/ Roman Catholic relations, but I do have a question about Baptist beliefs concerning alcohol consumption. I wouldn’t say I have found it universal among all Baptists but it is certainly highly prevalent that the consumption of any alcoholic beverage is always near the top in its regard as a serious sin by most Baptists.
I am not just referring to drinking to the point of abusive drunkeness or driving in a drunkened state, which is considered to be sinful by almost all faiths. I am referring to an occasional social drink or a glass of wine with a meal. I have known some Baptists who would not go to a dining facilty of any kind that served alcohol. I am just curious why this particular issue is regarded as being so vile?
