My mother, age 86, lives in a retirement resort. She has started going to a Baptist bible study. I have read some of the literature she brings home and it, of course, is not in line with Catholic teaching. She is pretty strong in her faith but she doesn’t have the knowledge to refute what she is being taught. I am worried that she will be led down the wrong path.

I have talked to her and given her rebuttals on this literature for the next class. She says, “How can I tell them this without getting them mad at me?”

I don’t want her to lose her friends, but more importantly, I don’t want her to lose her Catholic faith. I have always thanked her for giving it to me.

i think maybe the best thing to do for know is to find video tapes and cassettes that explain the Catholic faith.

As for your mother’s question…unfortunetly, anything she says that is contrary to what the group teaches will probably get people angry at her. It will have to be a balance of staying in the group while not saying much to anger them and still holding on to her faith. If she was strong in her faith, then she could find ways of letting them know the Catholic position using the Bible in a way that might not anger them, but for right know she needs to study the Church for herself before trying to teach others, imho.

See if you can find a parish that has an active Formation life and see if she wants to join. Then she can go to her Baptist study group but still have the support and information from her Catholic parish group.

What I find most interesting about this is that at 86 years old your mother is still affected by “peer” pressure:) . This reminds me of when my friends 75 year old grandma started smoking at the weekly card party she enjoyed with friends. She was not a smoker but smoked to “fit in”😃 .

I would not worry about your mom. She has lived a long life. I am sure she won’t be swayed. Sounds like she is enjoying the fellowship more then the bible study. God bless her:) .

Funny how the tables are turned. She always worried about me and now it’s my turn to worry about her. The other day I mentioned to her that my hip was hurting. She said, “Oh honey, I hope you’re not getting arthritis.” I said, “Well, Mom, I am almost 50. I wouldn’t be surprised.” She said, “I guess you’re right but I keep thinking you’re a little kid.”

Thankfully, she is a very active 86. Her answering machine message says, "Betty here. Out galavanting again as usual. Here’s the beep, you know the drill.http://forums.catholic-questions.org/images/icons/icon10.gif

My mom is 82 and still pretty active. She walks to Mass everyday and volunteers by going to the local hospital for the elderly to say the rosary with the residents there. I like to tease her and say: “Watch out mom they might not let you leave. The next thing ya know you’ll be tied into some chair.” She shutters at the thought. She was a nurse for many years in one of those hospitals.

My mom has an answering machine, too. Mainly because she is so hard of hearing she misses her calls.

My mom is affectionately known as “bingo grandma” to her grandkids. HMMMM wonder why:D ?

Hello moria,

In all my encounters with bible discussions with baptists, Catholics were always wrong and the Baptists were always right in their minds. In their eyes, it would be a great lack of “faith” for them to ever even toy with the idea that Catholocism was right and they were wrong.

I volunteered at a nursing home amoungst the ninety and one hundred year olds. The Catholic priest came and gave the sacraments, conversted politley with them and Parishoners visited. The Baptist minister came and put on bible studies. The Baptist minister said to me, “No matter how hard I work, they just don’t seem to get it!”

I always get the feeling that the Baptist are looking to put another knotch on their belt with another “saved” soul (they state, 'I accept Jesus as my personal Saviour), all the time. Catholics are more focused on caring for the sick, lonely and poor.

Jesus tells us, “If you wish to enter into life obey the commandments.” The Baptists hate Jesus answer. Even to the point of telling me that Jesus teaching of obedience and works needed to go to heaven through Him were obsoleted after Christ’s death. They told me now only St. Paul’s “faith alone” is needed to go to heaven. Does it not take a very bold Christian religion to tell people not to believe in Jesus’ teachings? St. Peter warns people not to be misguided by St. Paul’s writings because they can be hard to understand. Certianly basing the foundation of your religion on St. Paul to the exclusion of Jesus’ teachings is not good.

I invite you to visit Jesus, What Must I Do To Share In Everlasting Life? and Choices Of The Heart which focus on the many biblical verses where Jesus teaches us to obey and do works if we wish to enter into life through Him. Possibly you could print some of these pages with these verses of Jesus and take them to the next meeting for discussion.

The way people go to heaven is through the blood of Jesus, the reason people go to heaven is because they love God and love for God is accomplished through free from the will of God obedience to the will of God.

Peace in Christ,
Steven Merten

NAB LUKE 18:18

"Good teacher, **what must I do to share in everlasting life? **"Jesus said to him, “Why call me ‘good’? None is good but God alone. You know the commandments:
‘You shall not commit adultery.
You shall not kill.
You shall not steal.
You shall not bear dishonest witness.
Honor your father and your mother.’”

I am the member of the Baptist Church.
Though I am Catholic in my understanding.
Or may be it is better to say that , I am in the process of the convertion to the Catholic Church.
As long as I know the Baptists do not have very positive opinion about the Catholic Faith:yup:
The Baptists insist on special experience , through which You must pass personally.
The call is so persuasive that You can feel that You are not a real Christian, if You not had that convertion experience.
I think Your mother can prove to the Baptists that to be an example of exceptional holiness, One must not to be the Baptist, it is possible to be a Catholic also .😃 🙂 :blessyou:
