Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
 
About 30 years ago, priests and nuns disgarded their habits, and in some lay secular branches of religious orders, lay people wanted to wear full habits – reserved for their place in the coffin when they are dead.

And around the same time, neighboring Protestant ministers began wearing a Roman collar.
