Baptist Church is going to burn Bibles for Halloween!

heard about this a few days ago. and pictures of them in overalls standing next to books…
typical hard core anti Catholic types… the prime audience for the Chick Tract. these folks are the scary bad example that gets thrown in the face of every single half way sane Christian out there (well them and Phelps)

even the hard core Catholic haters sometimes find the KJV only corwd a bit much… there is a book called “The King James Only Controversy” by a guy i wont name… talking about this form a protestant point of view.
sadly he is a VERY bigoted anti Catholic, so i cant suggest you buy anything of his.

Sadly they are not the alone ones out there who feel that way. The NIV Bible has been vilified by many in the King James Only Movement.

A women by the name of Gail Riplinger has a lot too do with that nonsense. She wrote a book a while back called New Age Bible Versions. BTW, I know where she got her doctorate. Her whole background was manipulated to be more than what it is.

How insulting to God! I guess God could not preserve his words for the 1600 yrs prior to the 1611 King James? I am glad that most mainstream baptist I know, even if they love the King James, would never burn a bible.

A few reactions

1. It's silly to burn any Bibles. Probably the burning stems from (a) ignorance and (b) a desire for attention.

2. The KJV is fine. I personally love the Elizabethan language, but it is not as accurate as some of the newer translations.

3. Remember that there are numerous kinds of Baptists. Here in my town we have four Baptist churches, each with a different affiliation and perspective.

4. The Baptists are by quite a margin the largest Protestant 'family'. One out of every five Americans (20%) is a Baptist, just a few percentages less than the Catholic proportion - which ranges about 22-24%. Just how many are true Baptist or true Catholics is quite a different matter. I have followed polls in the US Catholic magazine where the results suggest that a high percentage of Catholics disagree with the church on such matters as articifical birth control and "one true church'. 

  God bless Catholics, Baptists and all God's children of every creed, color and country. May religion become a bridge and not a barrier.

While the majority of the “baptist” churches out there are associated with a specific group, the word “Baptist” can be used by almost any religious church without any say so by a larger authority.

so if i walked into a storefront, named myself a “minister” and wanted to name the church “Philadelphia Baptist Church” the only thing stopping me is if some other church already uses that name.

Baptist does NOT mean associated with any of the larger “Baptist” denominations. so it is often used to give a small single congregation group a bigger more authoritative sound. like Westboro Baptist Church.
note that the spoof site “landover Baptist” used Baptist as well.

so “even for the Bpatists this is far out” is missing the fact that they are NOT part of the larger more well known “Baptist” groups

Just an intro here- I was raised baptist. I attend a baptist church now. I was in the catholic church in my early adult life. I have been here gaining insight. So, I come at this from the vantage point of mostly baptist I suppose- but having some catholic understanding there as well.
If I were sitting in a baptist sunday school class and they were making jokes about catholics doing something like this I would be saddened and ashamed. I would walk out, but only after I told them so. I have done such a thing in class before. I don’t believe in joking this way. It is incredibly sad that these folks feel they need to do this. I know exactly the kind of people they are because I have gone to church with them. Not the very ones… but those like them. I do understand. I will tell you- even though you feel the need to offensively joke- these people truly believe they are being faithful to the Lord. They believe they are preserving the truth. For them, each one of those bibles is a new age translation. They don’t want anything to do with it. They can’t imagine those bibles will do anything but teach you about a false way and a false god. I am telling you- that is the reason. They are sincere. I am sincerely saddened by their choice. I fear for their salvation when I hear they are going to burn bibles- but I don’t think this is a laughing matter. My heart hurts.
I am not offended that you are joking about baptists. I don’t agree with joking over any denomination-don’t think it pleases God much. But I am saddened that i don’t hear hearts hurting over this. That I hear jokes and no one saying we should pray for these dear souls who God loves. Souls who are - in my opinion- putting their souls at stake by doing this. It isn’t funny. It is tragic. It is the kind of religious superstition and hate that has destroyed lives down through the ages.
I know many baptists who would be horrified something like this was going on. It isn’t typical. Shame on them. But with all due respect. Shame on you for making jokes. I hope you pray for them. they surely do need it. I am just about to cry. this truly tears me up inside. thank you for those who were at least outraged.

as i explained. the fact that they are A baptist church doesnt mean they are asociated with any OTHER Baptist church. that Phelps creature is the founder of Westboro Baptist Church. this has NO association with any other baptist church (praise God)

this is a genuine story. and there are MANY churches that are King James Only believers… there are books and books about it. and yes, many of these churches teach that any other version was corrupted by the Devil.

After all, in order to burn them, they have to BUY them.

The best way to protest something like that is simply…not purchase them in the first place. Ignore them. Boycott them. Leave them alone.

But no…they have to rush out and buy copies of everything Billy Graham wrote, and copies of all the new versions of the Bible, and all the other writings to which they object, thus actually supporting the folks they dislike so much.

Now, if they AREN’T purchasing their own volumes, but are burning stuff that belongs to other people, that raises an entirely different point.

The irony of this, for me, is too delicious not to comment upon. Blessings upon them and their faith, but if they were lightbulbs, they’d rattle when shaken.

1. I wonder if they will have any Satanists over in an ecumenical outreach since they now have this one thing in common.
2. Maybe they will join in fellowship with Westboro Baptist in Kansas.

Further more I think most of us here probably have “a little bit of knowledge” and we all can be dangerous with that knowledge. The church that is engaging in the show of Bible burning may very well be way off base but this discussion serves only to fan the flame of that fire.

The King James Version is a beautiful and valid translation of the Holy Scriptures. The translators endeavored to make this translation as true and as accurate as they could with the material they had to work with. This is a far cry from some “new” translations in which the translators are endeavoring change the meaning of ancient texts rather than using this ancient texts for greater understanding of God’s message.

I have no sympathy for the church or churches that are engaged in burning these Bibles but in regard to the word “fool” my favorite saying is: “Never argue with a fool, bystanders can’t tell the difference.”

It is a fun and delightful form of entertainment to argue with people when we think their ideas and beliefs are far inferior to our own.

I know the problem with these people probably better than you do unless you were raised around any of them up close and personal. What I am suggesting is a concern for how people are responding to them. I think they are wrong. Dead wrong. I support the King James Version of the bible as one of the most wonderful bibles that ever was translated. It isn’t that.
No, they aren’t thinking about how they are supporting these people financially or that people are looking at them and laughing. But I think a person who is fearing the Lord isn’t looking and laughing. They are saddened and praying. I don’t want to try to be their judge. I don’t want to try to be any person’s judge. I want to pray for them. I hurt deep in my heart for people who just don’t get it and who may be lost.
On the subject of fools- not too many weeks ago we did a series on the subject of fools from the book of proverbs. The fact that we should never call a person a fool was made clear- but somthing interesting was brought out. In doing a study through proverbs on the topic of fools you see that there are those who will hear and be changed- they just need info to properly understand- and those who you need to avoid completely because they will pollute your thinking or drag you in there. When the study was over it was clear to all that in some area of our lives- based on how the bible views a fool- we all get to wear the title.
Thought I better make clear here as well that I am not a KJV only user. I have several I look at. I have my KJV, NIV and New American in my quiet time space. That is not why this bothers me. The authors listed don’t bother me either.
This isn’t an extreme case though. I know of more than one church with these views. I know these people - maybe that is why I see more than just a joke to be had. I see souls…
