They are misguided but a part of me kinda respects those people. There are many liberals in the Church who water down the Faith in the name of ecumenism.
True. A fundamental Christian, even one who has deeply held beliefs I consider absolutely wrong, is much closer to the truth than liberal Protestant or Catholics who have no absolute beliefs. A Baptist who would be spiritually concerned about a statue or crucifix is closer to me than the liberal whose real interest is limited to sharing cultural heritage, with no hangups about doctrine.

There’s a Baptist church a couple miles over that has a really nice outdoor replica of the Christus statue by Bertel Thorvaldsen (a Danish Lutheran). I wonder if they’d give it to me if they were to overhear me admire it as quite the “Catholic piece of art!”?

Christus is more associated with Mormonism, than it is wit the Catholic Church- even though Thorvaldsen probably never even heard of Mormonism as Mormon missionaries didn’t come to Denmark until after his death.

It’s only associated with Mormons by Mormons and those who are familiar with Mormons. As you point out Thorvaldsen died the same year as the founder of Mormonism and never left Denmark so the connection is ahistorical. Also, if you look at the statue its clearly sculpted by someone raised in an older, liturgical tradition. I mean, this looks pretty darn “Catholic”:

Especially once you put candles next to it. Looses whatever Baptist/Mormon/minimalism it may’ve had before.

Interesting. When I watched the video, I was thinking the hang-up might be the panels looking too much like the Stations of the Cross. But the pastor’s comments make clear it is purely an iconoclast thing. Sad.

I like that statue more than the one in the article.

But it is very sad to see it removed from the Church simply over the fear of appearing too Catholic.

The objection was not to Jesus, but to a statue of Jesus. Some protestants would consider a statue of Christ to be a breach of the second commandment and to be idolatory

Great news. A Catholic Church nearby the area is taking Jesus home. :)))

““Yesterday we approached the Red Bank Baptist Church Lexington, S.C. to see if we could take the statue that they were replacing. The great news is that they are donating this art to another local church in their area!” Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Flowery Branch, Georgia, revealed in a statement on their Facebook page Friday.”

I would like to poll the congregation and ask how many of them actually worshipped the statue in the 11 years of its existance. When they answer with “zero” ask how can it be an idol in the Catholic church but not in the Baptist church?

Peace!!!

I think you misread the article. There’s no indication that a Catholic parish is taking it. Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Georgia said “The great news is that they are donating this art to another local church in their area.” Their area is South Carolina. The sentence prior to the one you quoted said: “Wright did not reveal the church that will be receiving the statue but it appears there was more than one church that was willing to take in the Jesus art.”

Maybe it’s like Paul wrote about the strong in faith being able to eat anything, but the weak being limited to vegetables. 🤣

\begin{byzantine chant}
Those who are weak in faith must have plain walls,
while ee who is strong in faith may have a statute of Jesus.
\end{}

😱:crazy_face:😂
