I thought I’d share this with people here. There’s a great historical site in Ephrata, PA called Ephrata Cloister (see: http://www.ephratacloister.org/). Back in the 18th century, it was a monastery and convent for German Baptists. The monks and sisters who lived in the buildings were celibate and lived a strict rule of prayer and fasting. They even dressed in garments adopted from the Carmelites! (if you click on the “History” tab on the top of the linked page I provided, you can see a re-enactor monk/sister dressed like one).
