Baptist pastor stands by anti-Catholic booklets passed out at local high school

What do you want to bet that out of the other side of his mouth, he criticizes Catholics for believing what the Church teaches, instead of researching every single detail of the Faith for themselves. 😛
 
This is the usual …what a true representation of protestantism…error on top of error!!! This is as rascist as anything.after all those…here one can insert the name of a group of folks like Italians,or Irish or Poles etc…hand out booklets that describe the typical ones as…gangsters,drunks or just plain stupido!!! In many ways its best to let this go for a while,later at the proper time witness for the RCC by being a good person…as Jesus wished…show how one is a Christian!!! Slander is always wrong,to yell and scream is fruitless…be calm and wave a tea bag and reveal how many Catholics helped build this once great nation. Pas
 
I would just love to see the reaction of the Fr. Flaherty quoted in the article went around the public school campus handing students Catholic literature. Never heard of a HS campus that was open to people wandering around handing out anything.

btw this is not “a true depiction of Protestantism” it is a true depiction of a very narrow segment of the non-Catholic world so please don’t commit the errors of those people by making such generalizations

When I was a Protestant I knew very little about the Catholic Church. I suspect many Protestants are like this. I certainly wouldn’t have gone around talking about something of which I knew nothing.

At least the Baptist pastor admits that he is unencumbered by actual knowledge and facts.
 
I live in the same diocese where this happened. Unfortunately, the “pastor” of the Baptist church is not alone in this area. I was given those same tracts when I was a high-school member of a youth group at a Baptist church. There are some people that I used to get in deep, but always respectful, discussions about faith before I converted. Now, I don’t even like to mention that I went to Mass to them as such hateful and hurtful things will come out of their mouths.

Annie, it wasn’t the pastor who passed out these tracts to my understanding; rather, it was high-school aged members of his church that did this. Most schools in this area have no problems with students passing out most anything during lunch, times between classes, or before and after school. I don’t think there would be that much of a reaction if the Catholic students handed out something like “Pillar of Fire, Pillar of Truth”. I would be willing to buy some for Holy Cross to give to the students to hand out if they are interested in doing that.

I’ll chip in but I was thinking more of sending Fr Flahrety enough CA tracts for all the cars in the Baptist parking lot a la Karl Keating.

Sorry for any confusion. The pastor provided the tracts and defends their distribution.
On the back of the tracts, a stamp reads “Compliments of Conner Heights Baptist Church.”

our schools have a huge problem with it and our students have been disciplined for handing out POF, equally other students have been disciplined for handing out Chick tracts and the like as well as political material. They are limited in the time, place and venue for these activities, such as FCA which meets as a club and so forth

Praying for anyone who is decieved by these booklets of lies. This pastor has clearly made an idol of the KJV bible translation.

I do believe that our courts have found that students handing out tracts at school is not a part of “state establishing a religion” (in contrast to school prayer). The courts have not found student-initiated religious activity to be unconstitutional. So this would be within the
free speech rights of these students.

A remember a while back there was a Catholic youth who started a thread because the school was telling him he could not have his rosary at school and I told him the same thing.

Someone who is more up on this can correct me, but I think this is the case.
 
There are prohibitions here about handing out such material during class times, but not during breaks in between classes, lunch time, or before and after school, as that is considered the students’ free time. Class time is the school’s time, therefore tracts like these cannot be handed out. However, if a student, during free time in the class, would like to read Sacred Scripture or other religious works then they are free to do so if they have no other class work to do.

FCA is Fellowship of Christian Athletes, though, depending on the specific club, one does not have to be a school athlete to be a member (or maybe marching band was considered a sport in my high school 🙂 )

I do pray for people like him. The pastor that handed me that tract so many years ago probably didn’t realize that eventually I would convert to Catholicism, thanks in part due to that tract. I pray that those who have received these will see them for what they really are, and say, “I know this is complete malarkey! What’s the real truth of the Catholic Church?” because that was the first question that ultimately led me to Holy Mother Church.
 
It is an utter tragedy that the “Chick tracts” and similar foolishness have not gone quietly into the night after all this time. It’s also amazing, from a purely human perspective, that such things are still believed and circulated in the 21st century. But from a Christian perspective, our Lord was not kidding when He warned us that in this world we will have persecution. Perhaps there will always be such hurtful, blasphemous nonsense - even in an “enlightened” culture like ours purports to be. Blessings to you all, friends. I’ll join you in prayer about this disturbing event.
 
At my school, there was a Chritian group that met at lunch every Wednesday, and was allowed to advertise and hand things out for it. I didn’t go because it was a very loose colelction of mostly Protestant students, but I attended once or twice to give it a shot.
 
The saddest thing about this is, all of this publicity just adds life to Chick and his tracts.
