Baptist version of CA forums....wow

When this forum was down , I decided to improve my apologetics knowledge about what misconceptions that other protestants had about the Catholic faith.

Anyways I become a member of a certain Baptist message board, and wow, I heard everything from pagans to Catholics not reading or being allowed to have any sort of scripture in our churches.

These people have never really done any sort of research on the Catholic faith, unlike myself who investigated claims about Catholics by non catholic or very anti Catholic sources.

I kept coming back to the Catholic faith( I would never leave, but sometimes you need to step back )

Anyways, the mass confusion and bickering on this board was crazy, some people believe in the rapture or they completely disagreed. OSAS was debated a debate on wine that went on and on with no agreement.

But everyone was very nasty to eachother, unlike here, which has made me realized that while we may not always agree with eachother, we are very chartiable .
 
I had the same experience on a different religous forum. If they disagreed with me, they just called me a bunch of nasty names. No debating whatsoever… Just “You are a &^%%* stupid &^(&^ ignornat $#%$# !!” It was ugly.

Not all Baptists believe this. A friend of mine from church (Catholic) actually was a volunteer at a Billy Graham crusade. The Rev. Graham had nothing against Catholics. My friend was one of the volunteers who prayed with people who made a decision for Christ or recommitted to Christ and chose the Catholic faith. The Rev. Graham just wanted people to be in a personl committed relationship with Christ. If they chose to do so in the Catholic religion, he had no problem with it. And as far as the Bible goes, my Catholic parish has an adult Sunday school class. We study the Bible (Little Rock Scripture Study). Currently, we are studying Paul’s letters to the Romans and Galatians. I also read the Bible daily in addition to my Sunday school class homework. The Catholic Church decided which books are Scripture, so we should read the Bible. There is nothing in the Bible that contradicts Catholic doctrine. Scripture supports Tradition and vice versa! :bible1:

Unfortunately, Billy Graham is NOT your typical Baptist. He is an exception, and IMHO, should be made a Saint when all is said and done.😉

I was raised Baptist, and I can tell you, there was never anything good said about Catholicism or Catholics, NEVER. And that’s why Billy Graham has had some rough criticism from the more Fundamentalist crowds, and he has never let it affect his convictions that what is most important is conversion to Christ, period.

Now that I am a Catholic, I have an even fonder appreciation for Billy Graham than ever, and I pray for his happy renunion with our Savior!

But, as to the subject of Baptist boards, I have no desire whatsoever to go to them, I know first hand about all the confusion that goes on in those circles, all the bickering and stiff necked feuds. I stopped attending church for 10 years because of it. I never gave up on Christ, but I certainly gave up on church, until EWTN, that is!

I’ll stay here on CA, and pray that we never lose this site again! It was like being punished not having this place! God bless you all for venturing out there though!

You know: I agree ! I’ve always appreciated Graham’s work, in my former life as an Anglican and now as a Catholic.

Well, I was a notional Anglican, anyways. When I started looking I realized that Rome was for me. But here’s the rub: my Aunt is a Baptist Minister and she always said that she believed I would be the “churchy” one in my part of the family.

And we get along famously!
 
My pastor gave us a wonderful little story about Billy Graham. A couple of years ago, his crusade came to San Diego. My pastor was part of an ecumenical group that helped facilitate some of the happenings at the crusade. His crusade came on Mother’s Day that year, and as my pastor was sitting in the 50,000 stadium audience, Billy Graham said, “You know, there’s one thing that Catholic have correct, and it’s how they honor Mary. Since this is Mother’s Day, I think that it would be appropriate to honor the Mother of Our Lord, so please join me in showing appreciation to Her.” And he lead the crowd in a round of applause.

My pastor was pleasantly surprised at this!
 
Funny that 🙂 I have a copy of time magazine where they discuss in earnest Mary’s role in Protestant Churches. Some of them, thank Gid, have realized that even with Sola Scriptura that Mary is mentioned in the holy Writ and thus cannot be ignored.

I’m sure there were a lot of pastors who went home that day shaking their head and wonder what they had just done! 😉

It’s funny, but I can actually thank the Baptists for returning to the Catholic Church! I was baptized, received the Sacraments of Penance and Holy Communion, and was confirmed as a Catholic. But in my early twenties, I became lapsed in my faith. A friend of mine (Catholic) took me to a Christian music festival because one of his friends is in a Christian rock band. There were people from many different churches (Catholic, Baptist, Methodist, Lutheran) at the festival, and they had booths and handed out literature, etc. Somebody from a Baptist church gave me a KJV Bible. I had never read the Bible previously. At that point in my life, I felt like something was missing, but just didn’t realize at the time that I was missing Jesus. I actually decided to read the Bible, and I read it all the way through. I didn’t become Baptist. Rather, I realized that everything that I had been taught in my religious education was true. There is nothing in the Church Tradition that contradicts Scripture! 👍 I prayed to God, then went to confession and became an active Catholic again. Since then, I have joined a Catholic Bible study at my parish, have joined my parish’s evangelization committee (we have a program for people to come back to the Church), I volunteer at an ecumenical mission meal for the poor, and I have become an EMHC.

Also I realized the unity of the Catholic church is a very comforting thing.

Praise God! He knows what we need, when we need it and always provides, sometimes and more often than not, in ways we would least expect. And it’s wonderful to know that you have been so completely inspired to serve whole heartedly! God Bless! 🙂

Been there, done that.

I, previously, gave Baptists must more credit than they deserved.

If it’s the forum I’m thinking of, they don’t allow Catholics in their forum because we cause too much trouble. They can’t stand to hear the Truth.
 
There are a few Catholics in there, actually an Orthodox that posts often. The few that are there do a great job of defending and explaining the faith. Its still amazing to me that rational people believe that we worship idols…

If we could all be more like the Rev. Billy Graham. . . .

Did you know he has an honorary degree from Belmont Abbey (college and Catholic monastery)?
 
Billy Graham is not liked by most on this specific website due to his association with Catholics.

The best and most fantatical on this website is the few Seventh Day Advenetists. They rabidly attack the Catholic Church,but are oftenly attacked themselves by Baptists, in which they have little defense.

Also - everyone here has a commen ground… becoming (or helping others) to b/c better Catholics.
So glad Im not part of the “MY church is better then YOURS” forums… :rolleyes:

hmmmmm… perhaps that’s why I got an email saying I didn’t qualify? Or maybe I gave the wrong answer to “How do you know you are going to heaven?” btw, I gave the answer “Because Jesus loves me”

It’s because their hatred for Catholicism is built like a house of cards. If they allow reason into the mix and then concede even one card, all the others fall. Instinctually they understand this and throw up a wall of defense that no mere human can penetrate.

The only ones who eventually allow a reasonable dialogue are the ones who have already found the cracks in the foundation of their belief system and begin the search for the Truth.

It takes a humbled spirit to admit everything they have believed is flawed, and usually the humbled part hasn’t come voluntarily. :rolleyes: It’s all a work of the Holy Spirit.

A real mystery how it all works, this former Baptist is still scratching her head. :hmmm:
