Baptized Catholic. Have not done Communion or Confirmation

I was Baptized Catholic as a child and have never done communion or confirmation (I’d like to and I was told I can register in august for classes) in the meantime, am I allowed to go and confess? Can I go up and partake of the Eucharist during mass although I have not completed everything? I’ve never been to confession, can I go or do I need to take communion classes before I can even do that. I am so confused and afraid. I do not want to do the wrong thing. I can tell you that I am whole heartedly devoted to doing what is right and that I will abide by what my faith and lord tell me. Any help or (name removed by moderator)ut would be great in steering me in the right direction. :signofcross:

You probably need some kind of refresher course before completing your Christian initiation with Confirmation, Communion, and Confession.

See your nearest parish and tell your story to the Pastor.

First off, welcome home! We’re glad you’re here.

My advice: speak with your pastor. He may want to place you in RCIA as a candidate or adult confirmation classes. You shouldn’t yet recieve communion until your priest tells you to.

Same with Confession. Although technically you are a baptized Catholic and Confession is available to you, I would still speak with him first.

Also, please don’t ever be discouraged if the priest seems busy or unenthusiastic. Our priests are stretched rather thin these days. Call your local parish and leave a message or just go up to Father after Mass if he’s free.
 
My wife & I are helping with the high school seniors. In our parish, students are confirmed in 11th grade. One of the seniors didn’t get confirmed but has now expressed a desire to do so. We talked to the priest and he said that yes, the student can get confirmed. The student needs to contact Father and talk to him to get the process started.
About your situation - you didn’t say who it was that told you to wait until August and I couldn’t tell your age - are you school aged? Since regular classes start in August, if you were that age anyway, I could understand why the delay.
Also - don’t be surprised when you go to talk to the priest if he asks you if you want to make a confession right now. There really is no age limit for confession.

Thank you so much for the replies, encouragement and welcome! It means alot especially since I am scared. I dont know why but I am. I feel such powerful emotions concerning my faith and love of Christ and the church that I dont know if I’m coming, going or if I went. As for my age, I am 33. I know it’s better late than never and that is a comfort. I am terrified of approaching the priest although I have called and left him a voicemail and I hope he will return the call. The person who told me that I would have to wait till August for communion classes was the secretary at the rectory. At the moment, I read the bible daily, pray and pray the rosary and have been attending morning mass daily and evening mass with my mom. I have been introducing my daughters (age 5 and 3) to church and prayer. This all started when my 5 year old approached me 2 weeks ago and said “Mommy, can you teach me to pray?” (You have to keep in mind, before this…we never went to church or prayed or anything of that nature. Both my daughters have been baptized but they were infants when it happened , unlike me, I was baptized when I was 7, with my other 2 siblings, in secret from my dad who was an atheist at the time.)

I was in the same situation - baptized, but that was as far as it went. In my parish, I went through RCIA, and got “caught up” with eucharist and confirmation on Easter Vigil with the rest of the RCIA class. Not sure if other places do it differently, however… I echo those above who recommend speaking to the pastor.

This may sound funny but Ive been wondering…

What Bible should I be reading? the NAB? RSV? Which?

The only one I have in my possession is a Gideon’s one a friend gave me after she took it from an embassy suites she stayed in.

Also, what would be a good children’s bible to introduce my daughters to? They are 5 and 3.

Well, since you are posting this in the Traditional Catholicism forum, you may wish to get the Douai-Rheims version of the Bible (if you can find one). Basically, it has all of the books in the Old Testament, but it uses the “Shakepearean” English you may be used to if you had been reading a King James Bible prior.

The NAB is in modern English, and is what is used in the (Ordinary Form) Mass, so you might find it a little more readable, though many conservative/traditional Catholics don’t much care for it, for a variety of reasons.

Look for a Catholic bookstore and purchase a catholic version of the Holy Bible. I like the RSV Catholic edition, but that’s just my personal preference. I think the language is prettier.

Kid’s bible- we have 4 children ages from 22 to 14.
I liked THE BEGINNERS BIBLE or READ WITH ME BIBLE.
Neither of these are whole “bibles” but rather they have ~100 bible stories with cartoon character pictures with bright colors and active words. They both give the actual bible reference (ie. Gen 1: for the creation story). My suggestion: read the kid’s version to them, then tell them you want to read them the “big people” version but have them close their eyes and imagine the story while you read. The reason this is important is that the kid’s version is you will run out of stories (only about 100 short segments) and can transition easier to the “big people” bible with them.
My personal favorite Bible - NRSV- other suggestions are good too
Secretaries at church sometimes don’t always give the best advice. If you are at Mass daily, you see the priest daily, he sees you daily, I would suggest after daily mass you ask the priest if you can talk to him for a minute - he will take the time I’m sure - and tell him you haven’t been confirmed, had 1st communion or confession and would like to. YOU CAN DO IT!!

Welcome Home! Best of luck! I think everyone has already answered you well enough. I would only second the recommendation of the Douay-Rheims version. Referring to your username, your surname wouldn’t be Sisk would it? I only ask because it is mine and I am known as the Siskinator! :cool:
 
**I find myself in the same boat. I am a 62 y.o. female who has only been baptized, no confession, Communion or Confirmation.

I went as far as setting up for RCIA classes and then cancelled them. I have a problem with walking distances away from home (am agoraphobic) and on top of that could only think about going through my first Confession ever. How does one confess everything one has done in a lifetime?

I know what I need to do but I am held back by my own fears yet I long for Communion.

Just this morning someone in my RCIA class asked how you confess 20+ years of sins. Think of it this way: focus on what’s going on in your life NOW, and also confess any sins from the past that weigh on your mind. Don’t think of being legalistic and thorough like you’re supposed to be when you do your taxes. Confess any and all mortal sins you remember; it’s not necessary to cite how many times, dates, details.

This is my 1st post…hope I did it right!
 
Magdamary, My suggestion would be to talk by phone with the parish priest and find out who runs the RCIA program. They may be able to connect you up with a sponsor who would pick you up and accompany you to the classes and rituals. Many of the people who have gone through our RCIA program have become very close to their sponsors; become good friends. It would be a wonderful thing to be able to participate fully in the church in your remaining years. May God bless you and I will pray that our Lord blesses you with the courage to step out and accomplish this thing.:)🙂
