Baptized twice

My boyfriend was baptized Catholic when he was a baby, but his parents converted to Baptist when he was 4 yrs old. Is he forever a Catholic even though he was never confirmed or received the Eucharist, even though he has renounced Catholicism? He was also baptized as a Baptist as an adult. Is that baptism considered void because one person can only be baptized once?

Assuming his parents did not write to their bishop to request removal from the Catholic Church, it seems logical that he is still Catholic in the eyes of the Church. If he were ever to return to practicing, he would need to make a confession, and would likely be Confirmed at the Easter Vigil.

His Baptist baptism had no effect.

you are correct. as St. Paul says, there is one Lord, one faith, one baptism by which we are saved. The second ceremony was simply that a symbolic gesture that may have been spiritually meaningful to him, but not baptism. He is Catholic now and always.

Yep. Just like it’s stated in the Creed.

“We acknowledge ONE baptism for the forgiveness of sins”. And since he was baptized Catholic as an infant, he is considered a Catholic.

I was also baptized twice. First in the Episcopal church where I was raised, and again in the Baptist church. I asked Father if I could get some sort of extra credit for the second one. He just laughed…

That is correct. The second attempt would have no effect.

My brother found himself in a similar situation. I had to laugh when he told me he’d been baptized a couple of years ago since I know he was baptized in the Church as an infant. I soooo wanted to tell him, “you didn’t get baptized, you just got wet!”

CCC1272Incorporated into Christ by Baptism, the person baptized is configured to Christ. Baptism seals the Christian with the indelible spiritual mark of his belonging to Christ. No sin can erase this mark, even if sin prevents Baptism from bearing the fruits of salvation. Given once for all, Baptism cannot be repeated.

CCC1280 Baptism imprints on the soul an indelible spiritual sign, the character, which consecrates the baptized person for Christian worship. Because of the character Baptism cannot be repeated.
