I know someone who comes from an occult new age back ground and they are being tempted by spell casting and whatnot. I think this person is drawn to the ritual, candles, incense, writing down paper petition and what not.

How can I help this person so dear to me. I guess I want to give advice on what he can do to practice a healthy Catholic Faith but still incorporate ritualistic symbolism that he can connect with? Idk.

Thanks In advance!

This may sound flippant, but, tell him to go to Mass. If he loves ritual, he’ll love the liturgy.

The ritual stuff this guy is doing is a gateway for the demonic. Pray God helps him because when or if he converts he will be very sorry he dabbled in that stuff.

Couldn’t he use candles and incense while saying a rosary or a litany to the saints? Just need to remind him that as Christians candles remind us of the light of Christ and the incense symbolizes our prayers being lifted to God, right?.

A votive candle by a statue of a Saint, Mary or Catholic religious icon is a good idea. It wards of the demonic.

Blessed salt is another good sacramental to use. The devil cannot cross over blessed salt.

A lot of the things mentioned here (use of sacramentals) are good ideas, but keep in mind sacramentals aren’t magic. What does your friend really believe?

Your friend would have to give up their occult beliefs in addition to their behavior. Perhaps they can use similar rituals to Catholic ones, but those rituals would have to mean to them what the Church holds rather than the occult meaning.

Reverted to Catholicism. He beliefs Catholic teachings. Just misses personal ritual. So I told him if he his praying for a saints intercession, write a prayer to that saint and light candle as a petition. No harm in that I guess right?

He’s used to using candles, incense, and writing his own prayers.

Also I guess Catholic meditation instead of transcendental meditation too.

Thanks for clarifying! I don’t see any harm in it at all; as Catholics most (if not all) of us light candles!

This is perfectly okay as long as he’s writing Catholic prayers and not casting spells or acting superstitiously, like “if I do this spell right the saint will grant my request”, etc.

Simply tell him the occult “magic” is bunk and could get him possessed by a demon, and he can perform the same rituals to the glory of God and have God’s strength behind him.

He has plenty of Catholic things to choose from for candles and incense.
He can burn incense to God any time he likes, just fire it up while saying prayers.
He can write his own prayers to God, the Blessed Mother, or any approved Catholic saint, and place the prayer on a home altar or burn the prayer paper or whatever, again as long as he’s not superstitious about it.
He can attend OF Mass, EF Latin Mass, or Divine Liturgy and participate in all sorts of rituals.
He can obtain candles with pictures of Jesus and saints on them from stores that serve Latino clientele (I’ve even seen them in Wal Marts).

Maybe introduce him to St. Patrick’s Lorica, which I find to be a very comforting “ritual” prayer for protection, and also to Blessed Bartolo Longo the former occultist, and St. Cyprian the former magician.
