Are they going to market scrawny GI Joe, emaciated Hulk, or chunky Thor action figures?

I want to know when people start to demand LEGO to make mini figs to be more realistic. Based on this study, minifig proportions are way off. If the body of a minifig is “normal sized” then they would only be 3.5 foot tall or so. On the other hand if they were average male height, then the would be almost 1.5 times too wide. And who in the world has a rectangular cross section anyway?

Okay the point is Barbie, GI Joe, and LEGOs are toys. Yes they added 3 more shapes, but what about the pear shapes or Babie’s with guts? Where is cellulite Barbie and “nursed 5 kids and 30 years of gravity” Barbie? Nothing wrong with the new ones, but it’s not like they now represent the fullness of female shapes.

Long and short is its a marketing ploy to make adults feel better about themselves. I never remember as a kid me or my brother and sisters ever once thinking, “wow our toys don’t represent reality”.

Yes, toys that are in the form of humans or animals are routinely stylized - whether to fit in with building blocks in the case of Lego toys, or to have a cute “doll face” or big exaggerated puppy dog eyes. It’s actually rare for a toy to be all deliberately realistic. There are some nice collectible animal figurines I’ve seen, such as those by the Schleich company. Or realistic people used by model train hobbyists in their layouts. But most play toys aren’t true to reality. Even traditional baby dolls have disproportionately tiny hands and feet and differences in the facial features from what a real baby would have. That’s partly why some people find dolls cute and others find them creepy looking. In the end it’s a matter of taste.

Not to mention, where are the articulated limbs? Or any limbs at all? Who has feet the same width as their shoulders and no articulation except the neck??

Although having holes in my feet that fit on standard studs on a subway or light rail would be really helpful.

Why shouldn’t these dolls have diverse body forms, as breathing human beings do?

Differing bodies also allow for greater creativity in clothing styles.

Because then parents have to buy more clothes, so their children can dress all these different dolls. Ka-ching! for Mattel.

I am sorry, but if my children got these dolls, they would have to be satisfied with the clothes they came in, because I am not buying sets of barbie clothes for each body type. Barbie clothes are surprisingly expensive.

Barbie has been racially/culturally diverse since at least the late 80s or early 90s, when I had them. My sister and I had the All American Reebok edition barbies. My sister had the blond one and I had a black haired one that looked a bit like Catherine Zeta Jones. We also had the Ken dolls, and there was an African American doll. I also had a Tennis barbie that had brown crimped hair with one highlight on the side and darker brownish skin.

Personally I don’t know why everyone picks on barbie. Mattel has been losing marketshare in this area for years. And if we really want to complain about disproportionate features can we talk about the Bratz dolls and the Monster High dolls. Their features are ever worse than barbies, including their face. Their chests are smaller, but their limbs are skinnier, and they wear slutty clothes.

I burnt a Planet of the Apes figurine once by accident (I think it was Dr. Cornelius). The first indication something was wrong was the awful smell of burning plastic. I left it in or near a fireplace in our house.

Never had much time for or opinion about Barbie Dolls. She and Ken seem a bit too Californian for my taste.

I know what you mean. But there are/ were also dark-haired Barbies that had more a sophisticated essence to them. They’ve even had Hawaiian Barbies (Meko, I think her name was), and black Barbies, which are very pretty. I’m not much for the Californian look. I’m partial to dark looks. Dark hair, dark eyes (or green), dark skin.

Its a good thing. I’d also support the idea for male action figures. At least the pursuit of strength and muscle is one of health. While simply being super skinny really isn’t gonna make you more healthy. The reality is that there is nothing unhealthy about having 10-20 pounds of extra bodyfat for either gender. Of course the pursuit of a muscular physique can be taken to an unhealthy level both mentally and physically in regards to steroids.

Staying at a healthy weight is a very good thing to promote. People can reach a point where they have too little bodyfat and the body will simply stop working right. I know someone very close who struggles/struggled with anorexia.

Men can generally have a lower bodyfat then women while remaining healthy.
