First of May is also exquisite. This is a beautiful tribute video by a fan. The Gibbs home movie must have been shot in Queensland in the 60’s, probably in their hometown of Redcliffe (now an outer suburb of Brisbane).
Technically is not an outer suburb of Brisbane, although it would seem to be in its proximity.

From Wikipedia - “In 2008 it was amalgamated with the Shires of Pine Rivers and Caboolture to create Moreton Bay Region.”

Just nit-picking. Actually I thought the Bee Gees grew up at what used to be called Cribb Island, which was resumed for the Brisabne Airport.

But you’re probably correct. A news item going back to 2012 indicates one of the houses they lived in may have been destroyed by fire.
A childhood home of Aussie music legends the Bee Gees partially destroyed by fire this morning

A HOUSE believed to be a childhood home of famous Aussie musicians the Bee Gees has been partially destroyed by fire this morning.
The blaze started in the bedroom of a home on Tramore St in Margate around 4.15am.

That’s right Penny, rain on the parade of a person whose work has brought joy to so many over several decades.

Seriously, there’s a time and place to argue about firefighters and teachers being recognized…this isn’t it.

The Bee Gees were born on the Isle of Man and their family originally lived in Manchester, UK. When they were kids or young teens, the family moved to Redcliffe and then from there later moved to Cribb Island.

Why was he knighted? Because he sang songs and made a lot of money? Or did he do something that benefited his fellow human beings? Did he use his fame to help the needy and afflicted? That would be worth something to single him out for an honor.

I guess I know firemen, paramedics and teachers that I think are outstanding human beings that are serving their communities and doing it without fanfare. God knows which is what counts in the end, huh?
Knighthoods can be earned for service to the Crown. Since we’re not in the days of chivalry any longer, knighthoods are given for things like entertainment and social contributions. The notoriety he and his brothers brought to the UK and the Commonwealth is seen as a national contribution and as a credit to the country.

Nothing wrong with him being knighted. Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Sean Connery, Michael Caine, Patrick Stewart, Elton John…the list of entertainers who have been knighted is long. And honorary knighthoods have been given to men like Ronald Reagan, Bill Gates, Bob Hope, and Robert Redford.

The female equivalent is a dame - and this list includes women like Dame Judy Dench and Dame Maggie Smith…and the very famous Dame Elizabeth Taylor.

Likely because of his philanthropic work, or maybe just because QEII likes his music. Why question it?

My understanding is that knighthoods go to people who are the best in their chosen fields, so not simply entertainers or rock stars.

He’s 72 fer crying out loud! Hardly young. Andy was young when he died, Maurice was 53 so not exactly in the first flush of youth.

Well, it is a fair bit younger than the allotted threescore and ten, true.

But then he certainly had a very full life and achieved plenty, so to me somehow it doesn’t feel like he went too early.

At 53?

I’m 45. I sure as heck hope I live to be older than 53, and by the measure of a lot of folks I’m sure I’ve had “a full life”.

I’m 45 myself in just over a month.

I guess I’ve been brought up that your time comes when it comes, whenever that may be, and that even a short life well-lived is more.than enough.

i had no idea they went back as far as 1963!!!

funny that a group from England would sing a song about going home to
Massachusetts!
I think I read that they wrote that in a hotel room in England because they liked the sound of ‘Massachusetts’ and all American placenames and they felt that there must be a lot of ‘flower children’ moving to the West Coast to be in on the scene there, so it inspired them to imagine how it felt like to be left behind on the East Coast at that time.

I was always puzzled that some of the BeeGee’s early masterpieces (60’s and 70’s) were not more widely recognised for their songwriting (and harmonies!).

Words is one of my all time favourite songs, in any genre.
‘Odessa’ is one of my favorite albums of all time. Wonderfully and effortlessly atmospheric.

Freezing,
Sailing around in the North Atlantic,
Can’t seem to leave the sea anymore.

I just can’t understand
Why you just moved to Finland …

So have I - but 53 is still very young. It doesn’t have much to do with how you’re brought up and more to do with sudden, unexpected death in the case of Robin and cancer in Maurice’s case.

What is the average life expectancy these days? More than 53. I think it is uncharitable to be so cold about someone else’s death, especially someone you don’t even know, or someone that died of cancer. To say anyone’s early death is just their time is thoughtless.
I agree with Pup, that 53 is young.
