My local independent pro team, the Washington (Pa.) Wild Things, has been having live baseball WITH FANS for a few weeks now. (Much smaller stadium than MLB, obviously, and they are limiting attendance.)

Their normal league, the Frontier League, cancelled their season, so they are playing a round robin with three other “local” teams, with all games at their stadium.

I might go up for a game next weekend. I said “local” but it’s about an hour drive away.

Seems like it wasn’t too long ago that they (Royals) were in a couple of World Series and winning their fair share.

Yep. Free agency decimated the championship team if 2014-15. Only three regular players from that team are still on the roster. Full rebuilding mode.

That sounds like the Tigers, selling off high priced stars and replacing them with minor league prospects and draft picks. The payroll went down but so did the amount of wins, too.

They remind me when I was little of those games at the county fair where you shoot a toy gun at the moving duck targets

Just curious who are some modern MLB baseball players who are considered devout Catholics that the general public might be familiar with.

I have an image in my mind now of so many batters who made a quick sign of the cross when they stepped up to the plate, but hopefully someone more knowledgeable can name some current players who stand out as devout Catholics.

The Catholic player I remember the most for his solid baseball play and being a devout follower of the Catholic faith was Mike Sweeney of the Kansas City Royals, although he has been retired for at least a decade now.

Here is a bit about him from Wikipedia:

His grandparents, Ben Lefebvre and his wife, were both coaches at my Catholic high school here in Los Angeles back in the late 1970s. (He’s the third entry in the article below, Benny Lefebvre).
Ryan has battled depression for years and has written a book about overcoming it. There was an article in the National Catholic Register years ago that talked about the role his Catholic faith played in his journey to healing.

Welp … the Marlins had a COVID outbreak. Home opener tonight against the Orioles is postponed.

Yankees at Phillies is also postponed, because the Yankees would have had to use the same clubhouse where the Marlins were this weekend.

I hope this isn’t the first domino that leads to the cancellation of the season.

Could be disastrous, but I hope it doesn’t get too bad. The Tigers are 2-1, which is like a miracle for them. I heard a few Cincinnati players have COVID19 too.

I am ready to bet dollars to donuts that, because of a so-called “Covid outbreak” among players with the Marlins, the entire MLB season will be cancelled indefinitely within the next three weeks.

I am also willing to bet dollars to donuts that not a single Marlin player will be hospitalized because of Covid.

Wanna bet?
