So I’m in recovery from childhood sexual abuse and codependancy. I’m really big into going on YouTube to listen to some of the videos on this topic because it gives me lots of comfort to hear from people who have been through it and understand. But every time I find a YouTube personality I enjoy listening to, they inevitably bring up the topic of religion and the church and how horrible it is and how it’s just a method of brainwashing. Then they start getting into new age ideas for healing and at that point I have to turn it off. My impression is that people seem to think it’s acceptable to trash the church because when I look at the below comments I see no one defending the church accept me. Also I never see Catholics doing YouTube videos on this topic so I feel forced to listen to the new agers. I don’t know if I should just continue to listen to the new agers and tune out their spirituality issues or walk away from it entirely. I want to find videos though on these topics because it’s healing for me to listen to others who have gone through what I went through. Thoughts?

I think you’re doing the right thing. You don’t have to throw the baby out with the bathwater. I also agree that making it clear to anyone, who is seeing you watch these videos, that you are separating out the stuff that ain’t right and turning them off at that point.

Also, this is something very personal for you. It is up to you to use the guidance of the holy Spirit to discern how far you should go with said videos. The videos may help/have helped you move on to a place where you no longer need them.

I understand your position, having gone through counseling for the same issue myself, and I am also distressed somewhat at the lack of good Catholic videos on YouTube. Have you tried finding the same on other video websites? Perhaps GodTube?

the Holy Ghost will help you tune-out the NA stuff. Please pray for those making such videos. They are still hurting and looking for a scapegoat.

Our Charity charism will eventually have a ministry to those with sex abuse issues. We hope to eventually have a laura of Carmelite hermits who will offer retreat facilities for those looking for healing. We hope those who come to the hermits will be either survivors or psychologists/social workers who can help. Memories can pop up at the most inconvenient of times.

Blessings,
Cloisters

If you don’t have a Catholic therapist, you could try to find one at catholictherapists.com

Talking with a Catholic therapist, if you are not already, might be very helpful.

God Bless

It might also be helpful for you to find a real life group therapy for sexual abuse survivors. You could make some new friends and share your story with others who feel the same.

Thank you all so much for your replies. I didn’t realize there was a Godtube, I certainly will check that out. I really wish there were more Catholic youtubers, it’s really odd because you rarely see Catholics represented on that platform. They are there, but the hot topics are not being discussed. New agers are all over the place though with big and huge followings, because they are talking about this stuff. And a lot of times they have valuable information to pass on. Its just really bummer having to sit through the Catholic bashing.
