"And this is eternal life, that they know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom thou hast sent. " (John 17:3)

How to understand this verse? Jehovah’s witnesses often use this to say that Jesus is not God.

Go just a little further in that chapter and you also find this.
John 17:24 “Father, they are your gift to me. I wish that where I am they also may be with me, that they may see my glory that you gave me, because you loved me before the foundation of the world.”
How about the first Chapter of John? In the beginning was the word and the word was with God and the word was God
And don’t forget who hovered over the water!
One God 3 persons “Father Son And Holy Spirit”
They will not understand because they are of this world. These are the mysteries of the spirit we cannot put them under a microscope. That is where our faith comes into play.

Jesus had Many names Christ, Messiah, servant, King, The Prophet, The lamb of God, The son of man, the son of God, Emmanuel, Bright Star, Alpha and Omega .I could go on and on but you get the point we cannot just pick 1 and exclude the rest or we lose the meaning.

I am a Dad .a Husband ,Christian, Catholic, Woodworker, Mechanic, sportsman etc etc
Just because someone says I am Dad does not mean I am not the others also.

I am also your brother so I wish you well just plant seeds and let God make them grow.
Peace 🙂

because Jesus Christ is also the One True God, made Man.

take them to passages such as John 14:6-9, John 10:27-30, and John 5:23 where the Lord identifies Himself with God the Father, and shows us how He is God the Son, worthy of honor as God, and the same as God.

He is distinct from the Father, and came from the Father, yet He is also One with the Father and co-equal with Him.

the JWs also that Jesus is a created being, that God made Him. yet John 17:5 shows that Jesus had glory with the Father before the world was made. as the first thing God did was to create the heavens and the earth, this shows that Jesus is uncreated, eternal, and God.

Why would eternal life be to know Jesus Christ if Jesus Christ was just a prophet? Since when has eternal life been predicated on knowing a mere human prophet, and why only one of the many prophets God sent?

Eternal life does not depend on knowing humans but on knowing God. This passage actually reinforces the teaching that Jesus Christ is God, not mere man.
