I live in neighboring York county. It’s know locally as “Conewago Chapel” It’s one of the oldest catholic churches in america . It is basically the Motherchurch for central Pennsylvania catholics. It’s Part of the Diocese of Harrisburg.

Are there special services done there? Is there some something special that makes it a “Basilica”? IIRC a Cathedral has a Bishop’s chair~is a Basilica along this line?

And why is it out there in the middle of nowhere:D ? I mean, Hanover & McSherrystown isn’t exact high traffic areas…

What makes it a basilica is that it’s the oldest catholic church in the united states. It’s an active parish so has a school of the same name. Well You Have the Basilica of St Elizabeth Ann Seton and that is is Emmittsburg Md in a small town as well.

It’s interesting~basilicas in these little towns, speaking of Emmitsburg there are two Catholic bookstores in that little town and none in mine, even though my town is much larger than Emmitsburg, but I pass through there enough that I can stop in and get…I like driving south on 15 in the mornings and seeing the sun shine on that big statue of Mary up on the mountain above Mount St. Mary’s…👍

The designation of a building as a basilica is an honor bestowed by the Holy See, generally for some reason of historical import.

Another Pennsylvania basilica that comes to mind is the Basilica Church of St Vincent Archabbey in Latrobe. It is the proto-monastery of the OSB in the USA.

I remember seeing a very tiny Catholic chapel in Exton, PA. not far from the Entenmann’s thrift outlet (if that’s even still there.)

This was YEARS ago, and I remember going inside to see what it could look like, since it was so tiny. The door was unlocked, which surprised me.

It was next to a larger church, if I remember correctly…I don’t know the name, is anyone familiar with what I’m talking about?

It is Saint Mary’s Chapel, part of SS. Philip & James Parish in Exton. For more info, including a history:
