I’ve been wondering about this for a while. Is God the basis of morality or goodness? If so, then does this mean that theoretically God can (but won’t) make abortion a moral good?

There’s a whole philosophy that goes along these lines, and maybe someone more studied on this subject can expound on Church teaching along these lines. It goes like this: Is love moral because God has so declared it, or has God taught us that love is moral because it inherently is?

God is love
Abortion is an act against love
God cannot do that which illogical

So, I would say no, given that doing so would contradict who He has revealed Himself to be, and God cannot contradict himself seeing as He is an infinite and unchanging being.

But essentially, yes God is the basis for morality. And ignoring the contradiction stuff above, I would say that it is possible, but given the contradiction stuff above, then no.

well god did order a lot of mass murders in the old testament. that is a little hard to reconcile. i do understand that it was to try and protect israel from sin and that jesus hadn’t come yet so we hadn’t been redeemed. and it probably doen’st mean that everyone who died went to hell either. but i could be wrong

The way to reconcile this is to recognize that we can never sufficiently know what it was like back then.
God was dealing with a mankind that was still living under the full weight of the sin of Adam. Mankind had not yet been regenerated by the blood of the Lamb at Calvary…
From this mankind, the Father had selected a small group to prepare them for the coming of the incarnation and the redemption of all.

It’s impossible to know what such an unregenerate population was like in general or what means might be necessary to move things forward.

One thing that we CAN know is that, regardless how these things occurred, every individual person was dealt with in mercy, justice, and love by our Father in heaven.

Whatever God orders is not a murder. Murders can only be committed by men on their own illicit authority.
