This is driving me crazy…we got a brand new tub when we moved to this apt 8 months ago and it is already IMPOSSIBLE to get clean from the hard water. It also has diamond-shaped grooves on the bottom for grip which makes it even more difficult. I’m looking for ANY suggestions for cleansers before I blindly buy some expensive bottle. I looked online and tried vinegar as a home remedy to dissolve it but no luck.

I have the same issue at our house. We have a well and a water softener and we still have a hard time with it. The only thing that I have found that works is the Comet Spray. I just spray the sides very liberally and use a sponge to scrub the sides and everything runs down into the bottom and into the grooves. I let it sit for about five minutes and take a scrub brush and scrub the grooves in the bottom and rinse the whole thing. It works like a charm every time.👍

Hmm I do have a Magic Eraser but I didn’t think it would work on that sort of thing. I’ll give it a shot 🙂

Have you tried the Mr. Clean Magic Erasers???
I second the Magic Erasers…that’s the only thing that works for me. I dont’ even try anything else anymore. I just keep them stocked and go straight for them when I need to get hard water stuff off anything. It gets my bathroom sparkly clean and it is so super easy. 👍

Magic Eraser didn’t work too badly…I pretty much decimated my sponge but I got some of it off. Once I get a good clean then I just have to stay on top of it. So hard to keep this all white, all hardwood apartment clean! Now I know why everything in my parent’s house was dark 😛

Yeah, if I wait too long, I tear up my sponge but it works. I started just keeping a sponge in the bathtub away from the water so it won’t stay soaked but I just rub it up and down the tiles and on the floor after every few showers. It comes off so much easier when it’s not all built up…but I guess that’s a big duh!

I second the lime-away suggestion, or CLR or something like that. That’s what I used when we had hard water problems. In our old apartment, the water turned everything orange (including my white laundry  ). I was really, really gross.

I am so relieved to have city water now.

I always thought it was a country thing, growing up on on a septic system. But now I’m an (unwitting :o ) urbanite I still have the problem. But yeah, when it stains orange is the WORST! Although, no worries about iron deficiency 😛

Dittos on CLR or Lime-Away.

Vinegar will also work, but it takes a little time-- you’d be best to pour it on, stop the tub and leave it there a bit. Also, heating it first (pyrex in the microwave, maybe) will make it much more chemically effective. If you see the deposits start to bubble up, you know it’s doing the trick…

PS Also, I’ve found those shower sprays to be reasonably effective at keeping hard water stains at bay. If yours is as bad as mine, however, they won’t won’t won’t (despite package promises to the contrary) gradually remove existing stains. But as I said, they’re reasonably good at keeping them away once you’ve scrubbed everything off. You just spritz some on while the surface is still wet.

once you get it clean and even while you are still working on it use that spray that keeps soap scum and hard water scale from forming, it is in a clear spray bottle, and you must check the label to make sure you have the one meant for your bathroom–ceramic tile, fiberglas whatever. Our water is as hard as my son’s head and using the spray daily after the last person showers keeps the scum off the walls, doors and floor, prevents that black buildup in corners, and makes it easy to clean when I do get after it

also the cleaning product you use depends on type of stain-black, orange, green, white etc. it might pay to get your water tested to know what you are fighing–iron, calcium whatever

Softscrub with bleach.

Works wonders with dirty tubs. Wet the rag pour some on and wipe it all over the tub. Then walk away, let it sit. It’s like toothpaste. Comeback after 10-20 minutes scrub it off and rinse. It should be clean.

I’ve tried everything on our tub and the only thing that works is Arm and Hammer Scrub Free bathroom cleaner with Oxy. It’s about $2.50 a bottle.

CLR bathroom/kitchen cleaner and a stiff bristled brush for the bottom. Spray it on an wait at least 3 minutes then scub. I also use a nylon pot scrubby for the side of the tub.

CLR or Iron Out but be very careful with Iron Out. The fumes can kill you. Read the directions and work in a well ventilated room.

White vinegar is what I use to get rid of mineral deposits. I’ve used it in my toilet bowl with great results. Get a spray bottle, spray the whole tub, let it sit for 20 minutes or so, and then wipe it down.

Though, you may not need that much time. It has gotten the mineral deposits off the bottom of my tea kettle in five minutes.

Non-toxic too! 😃

Basilisk, thanks for reminding me that it’s time for me to vinegar my kettle! 😛

My bathtub is exactly the same, with the little diamond-shaped indents. Who invented that design anyway? Obviously not someone familiar with cleaning a bathtub, that’s for sure! 😛 I also didn’t have much luck with the Mr. Clean eraser–it sort of worked and used up the whole thing.

What I found to work is this: Mean Green Cleaner, from the Dollar General. Spray the tub floor liberally and wait about an hour. Then take a shower in it, making sure to sort of “scrub” the whole floor with your feet. Or you could just clean it with a cloth or scrubbing brush.

I actually found this out by accident one day. I sprayed the shower floor (same design as our tub) and forgot to go back to it. In the meantime DH showered in there, and when I finally remembered I found a bright white shining shower floor :extrahappy: That just made my day!

Isn’t that what shower curtains are for? To hide the evidence? 😃

We use a combination. For mildew, mold and other ‘colored’ things Tilex Mold and Mildew spray. It takes 2-3 applications when it’s bad, but it’s great. Doesn’t work on rust though. I don’t know anything that does. The second product we use is Scrubbing Bubbles. They are for the weekly maintenance cleaning and keep it clean for many showers to come.👍

If none of these things work, could you get a pretty bath mat to put over the stains? :o
