I have been having lots of trouble with this sin. The first time I confessed it, I went three weeks before falling. The second time I confessed I made it two weeks. I just fell again yesterday and am planning on confessing today. What can I do to help break this cycle?

Also a friend asked me a question about my faith that pertains to this and I didn’t know how to answer it. If smoking is not a sin, then why is masturbation? his justification was that our body is a temple so isn’t smoking defiling our bodies and making in impure for god? smoking harms our body, how is it not a sin? smoking harms us physically and masturbation harms us mentally, shouldn’t they both be mortal? again thats my friends views not mine.

Try having different habits; have friendship with others. It depends on your age, is you are experiencing masturbationn as a teen, than this is normal, but if you are an adult, it signified that something is bothering you that everytime something is going to happen you masturbate.

Smoking amd masturbation are quite didfferent. You can tell you friedn tha smoking can be a sin b ecause one gets lung cancer; besides, masturbation is reservesde foor the marrid couple to conceive babies.

I know dealing with this problem can be a real handful. 😛

I think the community views masturbation as detrimental to your spiritual well-being and according to some sources, it is a sin defined under lust. The Catechism of the Catholic Church includes masturbation and pornography among the six offenses against charity (1994 pp. 564-566) while the Bible has the story of Onan (Genesis 38:9) and the following quote from Leviticus 15:16-17: “And if any man’s seed of copulation go out from him, then he shall wash all his flesh in water, and be unclean until the even. And every garment, and every skin, whereon is the seed of copulation, shall be washed with water, and be unclean until the even.”

I have never had a problem with compulsive masturbation so I’m not exactly the most experienced person on this topic. I know that after Korn’s guitarist Brian “Head” Welch converted to Christianity and left the band, he supposedly got a tattoo of Jesus on one of his hands that kept him for masturbating. Bit of an extreme example, but hey, if it helps…

We had a thread on this a while back, its a mortal sin though some may tell you otherwise because it wastes the seed of a man which should properly be used to create life and thus abuses Gods gift and because it always includes the sin of lust which is in and of itself mortal.

As for dealing with it, first don’t get too down about it as St Francis De La Sales said ‘Lift up your heart, then, quite gently, when it falls, humbling yourself profoundly before God by acknowledging your misery, without being in the least astonished at your fall, since it is not surprising that weakness should be weak, and feebleness feeble, and misery miserable. Nevertheless, detest with your whole heart the offence against God, and with great courage and confidence in his mercy, pursue once more the practice of the virtue which you had forsaken’

As for dealing with it avoid whatever leads you to lust and pray fervently and constantly, especially pray the rosary and petition our lady that she may give you the grace of purity.

keep struggling against this sin,and keep confessing it and always keep up your prayers which will attract the grace of God which in time will help you to stay away from masturbation and lust.

If you are caught in this net or web of lust and masturbation,Christ is the one who frees us from our sins and our sinful habits,so do all you can to be a good and better Christian and he will free you from your sins.

Instead of going 2 or 3 weeks at a time without masturbation ,eventually you will go for months without it and even longer .

Think maybe of the Church also,if you love the Church you will want to remain faithful to it ,be good to yourself and treat yourself and your body well and you will have better and fruitful relationships with others and the Church of Christ.

Pray to your Guardian Angel everyday also ,find prayers on the net to pray to him and your angel will guide you and help you overcome temptation.

God bless you.🙂

I may not be the best person to help you, since I also have had lots of trouble with this sin, and for a much longer time than you have. It is a biggie. The important thing is not to despair. Keep going to confession regularly – not every day, but regularly, steadily, so you’re constantly plugging away at it. Keep praying. A priest once advised me to try not to let masturbation become the centerpiece of my spiritual life – don’t give the devil his due, don’t let him force you to dwell on the sins you’ve committed or the temptations to do it again. Cultivate strong relationships. Don’t be alone too often. Build yourself up in every kind of virtue, and learn to love better as a Christian; you will need every tool you can get your hands on to beat this. (The happy consequence of which is your struggle may be propelling you down the road to sainthood.) Avoid the temptations of the internet: many people claim that internet pornography and generalized salaciousness can be an outlet for sexual energy, but actually it functions as an amplifier, like pouring kerosene on your desire and building up a whole new kind of compulsion. Know that culpability is reduced as the sin becomes compulsive – which is no excuse not to worry about it (you should be very, very worried about it), but it is a reason not to give up hope. Don’t receive communion when you’re not definitely in the state of grace, and receive it as often as you can when you are.

And be patient. In the end, your only hope is God’s grace, and grace works on its own timetable. Just be sure to make yourself ready for it by the time it arrives.

To your friend’s question, I would argue – and this will be controversial on CAF, I’m certain – that knowingly taking up the smoking habit nowadays, knowing what we know about tobacco, could easily be a mortal sin. Those who are already deep in the habit may not need to give up everything to break the habit, but there’s really no excuse for smoking.

That being said, there is an important difference: a single act of cigarette smoking is not going to kill you. Only the habit is going to kill you, over an incredibly long time frame. So no single act of smoking can properly be a mortal sin.

Masturbation is a direct attack on your capacity to love. Love is defined, in Catholic theology, as giving oneself to another person, and sex is a powerful physical form of self-gift. Masturbation (and the related lusts) take the whole engine of natural, outward-facing human love, and turns it in on itself. It is profoundly selfish, profoundly isolating, and profoundly unloving. A single act of masturbation, freely chosen, is damaging enough to turn the lights out on your soul. Thus, it is a more serious and dangerous sin than any single act of smoking.

Hope that helps. God bless you.

Try saying the Chaplet of Divine Mercy. I have been doing it for about three days and I haven’t masturbated when I used to almost every day.

If you have problem (masturbation) the programmers can develop a /porn filter/ . .

You may want to see a medical doctor. I’m taking Paxil for depression and it reduced my libido drastically. Paxil’s effects on the sex drive is well known in the medical field.

“In trying to get rid of bad habits, it is of the greatest importance not to put off going to confession after a fall, and also to keep to the same confessor.” St. Philip Neri

Here is some important info about the Miraculous Medal, one of Mother Theresa’s
favorites.

“Have a medal struck… All who wear it will receive GREAT graces; they should wear it
around the neck. GRACES will ABOUND for persons who wear it with CONFIDENCE.”
From the mother of Jesus spoken to sister Catherine Laboure 1830.

“Great graces are often attached to what seems trifling.” St. Margaret Mary Alacoque

During this apparition, Mary’s hands had 3 rings on each finger. Each ring gave off
rays of colored light. A few rings did not. Mary said that the lights radiating from
the rings are graces that people ASK for. The rings that didn’t radiate she said
were graces not given because they were NOT asked for.

Wear her blessed miraculous medal. Then say, “Mary I am asking now for you to
obtain the great graces for me which you have promised to give to those who ask and
that have trust in you.” Trust her, it works. She is the mother of God.
Would she not be truthful?
Her wish is for you to have this. It is her gift.
