The Chaldean Catholic Church as well as the Assyrian Church of the East (I’m fairly sure of that), during the Ephipany season have period called Ba’utha, which means begging. This sub-season commemorates when the people of Ninevah (Chaldo-Assyrians) repented because the prophet of God, Jonah, preached only a few words to them:

Jonas 3:4
And Jonas began to enter into the city one day’s journey: and he cried, and said: Yet forty days, and Ninive shall be destroyed.

On the January 14-16, all Chaldeans are expected fast completely from food until noon and abstain from meat all together.

The story of Jonah is remarkable because it is one of the few instances where we begin to see the salvation history unfold before our eyes since these people were not Isrealites.

Peace and God Bless

Thank you; it’s really nice to be able to learn something about the liturgical seasons of the eastern churches. It would be great to have more posts like this, and I’ll be thinking of our Chaldean and Assyrian brethren during these penitential days, and will be praying in particular for the persecuted Church.

A tread indeed: Father Andy has translated some of the prayers from Ba’utha and they are now on the web. It is has been said that these are some of the most beautiful prayers our Church has. You can view them here:

Enjoy and God Bless.

I read the opening prayer and the first madrasha and they really are beautiful!! Thanks for this post! I await more like it…👍

Johnny, thanks for this thread 🙂

I recently learned that a few other Churches besides our own also maintain this fast. I was at a dinner with a few of my school friends at the house of an Eritrean Catholic friend, and she mentioned that they also maintain this fast! I was shocked! I had thought that this was a specifically Chaldean-Assyrian fast, unique only to us, since it deals with our people.

I did a little research, and I came up with this:

Rogation of the Ninevites (Nineveh’s Wish)

Assyrians of the Syriac Orthodox Church, Chaldean Catholic Church and Assyrian Church of the East practice a fast called Ba’uta d-Ninwe or Bo’utho d-Ninwe (ܒܥܘܬܐ ܕܢܝܢܘܐ) which means Nineveh’s Wish. Copts and Ethiopian Orthodox also maintain this fast. See article about the Roagation of the Ninevites

God bless,

Rony

Ba’utha started today.

No food or drink (except water) from midnight till noon as well as no meat for 3 days.

Tomorrow Ba’utha starts!
Join us in the fast of the Ninevites

The fast of Nineveh is observed by all the Oriental Orthodox and Catholic Churches . . .

It is beautiful and I like to observe it too! Thanks for the beautiful prayers!
