Bavarians wary of new law requiring crosses in all public buildings

Well, For almost 1500 years, Bavaria has been devoutly Christian and even before that had a strong Christian population dating all the way back to Roman times. While most of Europe has discarded it’s Catholic heritage, it is nice to see that Bavaria has retained a concept of that identity. I don’t think that it is meant to be oppressive to migrants. Anyone who enters Bavaria would know that Catholic identity due to the Crucifixes everywhere… and I do mean everywhere. I’ve been on a bus through the countryside of Bavaria and suddenly there is a twenty foot crucifix in the middle of a farmer’s pasture.

For any foreigners, whether migrants or tourists, Christian symbols are as much part of Bavaria as Oktoberfest and Lederhosen.

I suspect it’s being done for party political reasons rather than for a devotion towards the Cross .

Politicians do wrong things for the wrong reasons all the time, at least they’re doing the right thing for once - whatever their reasons.

I have mixed opinions on the so-called ‘migrants’, but I am staunchly against the disgusting practice of kow-towing before Islam and punishing those who criticize the migrants and their apostate cult.

Of course many Bavarians are heretics, too, but that’s another problem. No reason to compound Luther with Mohammad.

Bavaria does, however recognize Catholicism (and Lutheranism?) as state religions, so in a circumstance like that it seems appropriate that crosses would be in public places and even that political parties would support such an idea.

Bavarians are mostly Catholics not Lutherans.

Most of the priests I know growing up in Asia, in a predominantly Islamic region with some Buddhist presence were either German from Bavaria, Irish or Italian.

The guy who initiated this is a populist, double standart preaching politician known for years for his outbursts of sexism and ignorance. I´m a german and this is simply the usual german politic battle with the usual nonsense. There´s a reason public offices and universities here should remain religiously neutral. He even attacted local orthodox churches and no, this won´t make it better.

Thanks for your insight…I don’t know if anyone here bothered to read the article…both Catholic and Protestant leaders are against the idea…even the person (Soder) who is proposing it said it’s not to be viewed as any religious symbol.but rather a cultural one…I wear a crucifix because it reminds me of the pain…suffering and death that Jesus Christ paid so that a sinner like me could be reconciled to God through his sacrifice…not because it reminds me I’m a “cultural” Catholic or a “cultural” American

Yes, Bavaria is primarily Catholic (the Bismarckian empire stole it from Austria’s influence in their wars of aggression), but it still has quite a few Protestants - not to mention atheists and communists.

I doubt , @Peebo, , that many went to the trouble of reading the article .

That would mean they would be informed , and clearly some just don’t like to be informed .

Yes , the Cross is a most precious symbol , and not some token about culture .

… and finally one year older 😃
Of course this is only my opinion, but it´s maybe easier for a german to see the whole debate here. The campaign is not only lead by Söder, but also by Seehofer who is actually making a mess in his office as minister for the inner and culture. It´s a pseudo-conflict in my eyes, as they use the cross as a culural sign for the “christian occident”, not as a religious symbol for christians all over the world. It´s part of a larger immigration debate here, and while I won´t go so far to call a certain viewpoint wrong or right (of course I have my opinion, but this isn´t a thing in this special case), these people won´t do anything constructive to the solution finding process.

Thanks for your insight @alice24 .

You´re welcome 🙂 Of course you´ll find people with a different view on this, but maybe it´s good to know some critics as well 🙂
