seems to me it is highly unlikely Bear Grylls is catholic; his father was a Conservative MP and his maternal Grandmother was an Ulster Unionist MP - both political parties steeped in British Protestantism. With both sides of the family having these allegiances it is hard to surmise he is anything else but protestant - most likely of the Church of England (Anglican) as that is the only church on the isle of white - where he was born
True enough, but it doesn’t mean he kept this faith, even if born with it. It is entirely plausible that he changed faith somewhere along the line, or even believed in secret. If he wasn’t Catholic to start, I’d be willing to bet that once he moved out on his own and whatnot, that he converted over.

this could be the case and you are entitled to think that, but as a Brit myself, acutely aware of the landscape of politics and religion, it is exrtremely rare. Of course Tony Blair was an Anglican who converted but wasn’t received warmly. Similarly with his grandmother being and Ulster Unionist where no member is catholic and deep resentment is prevalent this would be the type of thing to estrange from this sort of family - with whom he is very close

Both Les and Bear were in the SAS.
I save seen many of the things they do in Book written by exSAS.
Nope: Les Stroud is a professional musician, not SAS.

I really don’t see why these arguements come up-- watch either, whatch both, watch neither. It really doesn’t matter, does it?

Yep. And that was actually in my mind as well. I’ve never met him, of course, and although there are several possibilities, we can only really know from an interview, or personal meeting.

Which, on a new point, I must say, I would very much like to meet him.👍

If he is Catholic, could some one teach him how to do the sign of the cross. Half the time he does it wrong. I picked up on it because I’m constantly correcting my little boy.

The only time I saw him cross himself he did it right to left… just like most Catholics of the Eastern Rite Churches in Union, and like the orthodox.

Right to left, left to right: both are correct.

If you look at his official website he responds to the right to left crossing saying he is so nervous. He says he is just an ordinary Christian. I doubt he is RC or even an Eastern Catholic. He is a sincere Christian but no Catholic would say he is an ordinary Christian. Nor would an Orthodox Christian be unclear in his faith.

We believe the Sign of the Cross is one of the oldest Christian prayers. It belongs to all of us and may this lead him to the fullness of the truth.

I didn’t realize. It just bothered me because I’ve been trying so hard to get my kids to do it the way I was taught.

Sorry, becouse my lenguage

I saw Yesterday mr. Bear Grylls's on Disovery chanel as a leaping from airplane. In that time he made Sign of the Cross, but not usually I used to see on TV at catolic people (left to right). He made right to left, but with three fingers, that is the authentic way how orthodox people made Sign of the cross.
I am a little research, and behold me here.

If I had to say who was the most extreme of the two, I’d have to say Bear wins in that category, hands down. I think Les tries to at least clean and cook the things he catches to eat, while I’ve seen Bear eat a lot of things that were still wiggling, oozing, alive, etc. I’ve never seen Les crawl inside a dead animal carcass for warmth or wring out animal waste for hydration or drink urine for hydration. So, I’d say Bear is loonier than Les 🙂 .
Not to mention eating nuts out of bear poop. But he did rinse them in water first at least… but still…

Bear Grylls actively promotes the Alpha course, which began in an Anglican church but is presented around the world by all the major Christian denominations, including Catholics. In fact, at an Alpha International Conference in London last week, a large percentage of those attending were Catholics bishops.

Bear’s image is on all of Alpha’s promotional info in the U.S., and he mentions Alpha on his own web site.

Here’s a link to learn more about Alpha in the Catholic church in the U.S.:

Bear has just finished filming a new Alpha promo spot that will begin appearing later this summer.

There’s a competition I wouldn’t want to win.

He is a fake. But there is no need to use such an awful word.

I like Ray Mears, hes a nice guy, don’t know if you get him over in the states.
Bear does not claim to do everything without any help. The point of his show is to demonstrate to people how they can survive in various climates, not to just show him surviving.

And yeah, most British special forces guys who specialized in survival techniques (as well as the youngest person to climb Mt. Everest) are normally “fakes”.

First of all, yes Les Stroud (or however you spell his name) is the “real deal” in terms of the fact his show is real, whereas Man vs. Wild is staged a lot of the time. But honestly I don’t care. Bear Grylls is much much much more interesting and entertaining than Les Stroud, and I just find the show overall a lot more enjoyable. I don’t care if he really is half a mile from a highway when he claims to be stuck on a volcano, I am willing to suspend some disbelief for him because he’s just that cool.

As to liking him more if he’s Catholic, i’m not sure there’s anything wrong with that. Remember the Bible says you must love everyone, not like everyone. We are called to love everyone regardless of their religion, but there is nothing at all wrong with liking someone more because they follow the same belief system as you. I know I would not like my girlfriend as much if she was not Catholic because then that would be a very important part of our life that we did not have a common belief on. I say if Bear is Catholic, then good for him, and i’m glad he is. Im personally guessing he’s Anglican though.

Bear Grylls is (conservative?) anglican. He visited the alpha course in a anglican church (Holy Triniti Brompton) with his wife. alphafriends.org/news/bear-grylls-my-faith-quite-simple
For me as catholic, that doens¨t change my sympathy for Grylls. I hear him more times saying in his show that faith is important in such extreme survival situations. That was an inspiration for me, because in the last years I¨ve experimented God going outdoors on the nature and also in extreme situations, where there is no more than you and Him. I can understand Grylls perfectly. Why you critized what Grylls eat and make in nature? Don’t you know the first saint in “Grylls style” of Christianity? John the Baptist lived in the desert without NOTHING but eating crickets and wearing animals skins! As Grylls said: “Direct contact with the outdoors often leads to a spiritual or religious feeling that can give your adventure a rich dimension beyond physical exertion, scenery, and counting miles. As a friend of mine remarked, “What was Jesus doing in the wilderness for 40 days? Hanging out?” More likely, he strapped on his sandals and went trekking; he understood the spiritual value of traveling miles in the outdoors.” From: primermagazine.com/2008/live/life-according-to-bear-grylls
Do you forget that Jesus took all the apostels just to the desert for days as a preparation before they went to spread the word? Do you think they just go to pray? How do yo think that the apostel and so much missionaries still nowadays went around the world? I¨m sure the most of them go through physical situations that aren’t far away diferent from grylls survival stories.
When you dont have nothing but your body an the creation of God all around you, you will know what it really means to be a human child of God.
And I remember these things when I look Grylls too.
