Beatification of Padre Pio?

I am a Catholic convert, and although I know a good deal about how to answer Protestant objections, I don’t keep up much on internal matters. I caught part of a program on EWTN that I believe was supposed to be a mass for the beatification of Padre Pio. I don’t know how old it is, but the mass was said by a close friend of his.

Lately in the news we have heard a great deal of the beatification of Cardinal Newman, but I haven’t heard much hoopla about Padre Pio. Am I missing something?

Not really. St. Padre Pio is already canonized.

Padre Pio is already Saint Padre Pio.

1990 - Padre Pio was declared a Servant of God.
1997 - Padre Pio was declared Venerable.
1999 - Padre Pio was declared Blessed.
2002 - Padre Pio was declared a Saint (canonized).

Also, the Holy Father went to England, on the first-ever state visit by a pontiff, specifically to canonize Newman. Thus, it was the context of his trip that generated the initial news coverage, followed by the discussions of Newman. Other factors in the amount of coverage:

—Newman was a well-known convert.
—He was a leader of the Oxford Movement, which, in successive generations, resulted in many other conversions from Anglicanism (my own included).
—His beatification was considered overdue (by modern standards), his having died in 1890.
—Ecumenical ramfications with the Church of England, who still honor Newman, as well.
—Set against the backdrop of the apostolic constitution Anglicanorum Coetibus of last year, whose provisions and impact continue to unfold, making the beatification more pertinent.

Think you made a typo. He went to beatify Newman, not canonize him.

The reason that Padre Pio was brought up on EWTN was because his feast day was Sep 23.

The discussion was mostly about Newman because it was the beatification of Newman that was being covered and was the occasion for the question. I don’t think that you could do much better than that, without asking further, perhaps more specific questions.
