I always showed respect when the bells rang too, PeterC. Our new priest just recently did away with the bell ringing, as he did away with our beautiful marble altar, and exchanged it for a wooden makeshift altar, and is going to add a contemporary Mass with a band, while he walks back and forth and out into the church during the homily, BUT we don’t want to hear any bells ringing during the Mass. I never thought a day would come when going to Mass would be stressful. With respect to all I think you are confusing where the act of beating our chest occurred in the mass. Remember the alter boys rang the bells at certain places during the consecration? Even the old missile showed the “Bell Symbol” at the right time (three bells) then we said as we stroked our breast, “My Lord and my God” three times. We could not look at the host at that time. We had to bow our heads and lower our eyes as the bells rang and we stroked our chest. I was instructed to do this by my first grade nun in 1947.
