Is the goal to get rid of pews all together?
The traditional way is to have pews along the walls for the infirm only. We aren’t there yet but about half or slightly less that 1/2 of our Church stands all the time.

The Church I will most likely join stood about half of the time. I believe that we sat during the Homily.

My parish is gorgeous, to me, but unfortunately our website is down at the moment.

We have pews too.

They are sure ugly and they get in the way. How does one do a full prostration or even a profound bow with those things in the way? How does one move about and venerate various icons? How do children move about freely? How does one stay awake through a two hour liturgy? How does one have adequate room to accomodate a full house of people?

Yes, it will take time.😦

Locally the Greek Orthodox faithful avoid falling asleep by playing rousing organ music on their fancy organ… Even in the padded pews of the GO cathedral it keeps their toes a-tappin’! Ditto for the Antiochian Orthodox Cathedral where I grew up.

That as the case may be, there does come a point where traditions, accomadations and inculturation sets in… even if that makes us “less pure” and just respecting it goes a long way. If you posted photos of your church, I would not get excited to point out what I felt was incorrect or worse yet what is “ugly” about it.

This humble Ruthanian Parish near me is beautiful in its own right, it certainly doesn’t have the grandure of some of these other Churches, but it still inspires me. Some of the icons were written by parishioners, and the icon of the theotokos that is behind the altar was written by a former pastor of Ss. Cyril and Methodius.

pictures of the parish are at the bottem of the page.

The Priest that is there now has a habit of clearing his throat loudly fairly often. Once when I was there with a friend who was going through RCIA at a Latin Rite Parish the Father cleared his throat during a prayer that he was saying very fast, and my friend thought he was saying a greek word when he heard akaphgh!

I actually belong the above mentioned parish St. Elias Ukrainian Catholic Church in Brampton. It is an unbelievably beautiful church. You can check it out at www.saintelias.com and there is a link on the main page to various clips from our services my father has put up on YouTube. Enjoy!

Yes, St. Elias is certainly the most beautiful and impressive parish I have seen. Many years to Archpriest Roman and all the parish. I have visited with my family several times and hope to come again (it has been six or seven years since the last time) and my kids still talk about visits so many years ago.

It is also an incredible witness to what is possible when a parish is united in love, the orthodox faith and firm adherence to tradition. Starting out in an RC gym, moving to the prison chapel, and finally to the incredible temple on Heritage Road. What an inspiration to all of us, especially in the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church.

Besides St. Elias I would also add Sts. Volodymyr and Olha Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church as well as St. Nicholas UGCC Cathedral which are only two blocks apart in Chicago.

What a beautiful church especially with it covered with snow. The pictures and accompanying text in the virtual tour were really well done and showed why things are set up the way they are why they are done in certain ways.
