Dear Brothers and Sisters,

At the end of his Sunday Angeles Address for the First Sunday in Lent, Pope Francis prayed:

May the Virgin Mary, perfect icon of obedience to God and of unconditional trust in His will, sustain us on our Lenten journey, so that we place ourselves in docile listening to the Word of God, to undertake a true conversion of the heart.

Mary, Mother of the Church, perfect icon of obedience to God and of unconditional trust in His will, sustain us!

It seems to me each Pope has a unique devotion to Mary, and understandably so – each became a Vicar of Christ her Son on earth. As Jesus honored His Mother, they need to honor her as well.
