A poster in response to something I posted about what the Pope Said.
She responded: He has to say that.
Does he make public statements or have his Vatican Officials issue statement just because they have to without any underlying reason or motive?

HUH? WHen the pope speaks about an issue he does so for the benefit of the Church that he leads his flock. He also does it for the betterment of mankind.

You question is a little ambiguaous, do you have an example you would like to share?

Peace:thumbsup:

Just apply the remark “He has to say that” to any one phrase that is put out by the Pope/Vatican/Magisterium that concerns any current or recently current issue.

I don’t want to give an example because I don’t want to the thread to turn into a debate.

If you want a specific example, I will PM you at your request.

This does not sound like a basis for trust that the question has been asked with sincerity or in the interest of intellectual honesty.

  1. In real strict terms, nobody is truly obligated to do anything.
  2. I’m sure the motive behind all statements of faith and proclamations is the edification of humanity in Christ.
  3. If you’re wondering if the Pope decrees beyond what he is revealed by the Holy Spirit, the answer is “no.”

Okay, put that in layman’s terms.

True, yet the person who said: “He has to say that” indicates otherwise.

So answer the poll with that in mind. Does Pope/Vatican/Magisterium just throw out stuff just because it has too without any reason or motive.
  1. If you’re wondering if the Pope decrees beyond what he is revealed by the Holy Spirit, the answer is “no.”
True and I am not asking that.

As for an example, It has already been given. It is hiding in plain sight. Just don’t turn this thread into a debate about it.

I do not believe that he does that. That said, the Pope’s job is to lead the Catholic Church. Of course, Christ is our ultimate head. 🙂

If the Pope or the Church through an Ecumenical Council is making a public definition of faith, the Holy Spirit will prevent error from being taught. It is God Who does that for His Church.

Even when not making formal doctrinal pronouncement, the ecclesiastical Magisterium of the Church (which includes The Pope) is ALWAYS under a divine obligation to make public statements in line with Sacred Tradition. Any other statement would be a cause of scandal.

With that divine obligation in mind, there is truth in the statement “he has to…” However, the motive is never out of personal vainglory or mere whim.

In truth, the question your friend asks is completely inconsistent. If one “has to” do something, there must necessarily be an underlying impetus that compels the action. However, if your friend asserts that there is no underlying reason or motive, then the whole question is self-defeating.

Inconsistency is one of the hallmarks of anti-Catholicism.

That is my contention as well.

I for 1 find this kinda goofy and redundant. The Pope speaks through the power of the Holy Spirit.

infallibly? Every single time?
ex-cathedra.

here are some links to Papal infallability

The Pope is inspired through the Holy Spirit. The message that flows from the mouth of the Pope are given to him through the Holy Spirit. He speaks when appropriate not because he has to.

please read these before your post. BTW who is Tram and why is He/It the way??
