I went to the website catholictherapist.com and I was wondering what are the prerequisites for being one. Does being a Catholic therapist require an undergraduate/graduate degree in Psychology? Thanks in advance.

As bonvivantHermit mentioned, the answer will depend upon where you want to practice and what type of counseling you want to do. S/he posted a link regarding psychologists, however in the US other possibilities also exist, such as licensed clinical social worker or licensed professional clinical counselor or licensed marriage and family counselor etc.

Reading Philip Rieff’s *Triumph of the Therapeutic *ought to be one requirement!

My priest suggested that I read this book before beginning my master’s program in counseling at a secular university.

Oh how wise he was for giving that advise!

The very first night of my very first course the 60-something professor who had counseled others for decades stated, “The goal of counseling is to help people feel better.”

That may be true if there were no God and no Heaven and Hell. But the faithful Christian certainly recognizes it is not true.

The goal of counseling is to help people* be* better. And “being better” is defined as being more Christ-like. And the Catholic Church holds up the True Christ. For the Church is the “pillar and foundation of Truth” and Christ is Truth.

The world needs FAITHFUL Catholic counselors. May God bless and guide you to become one!!!
