What you need to do is speak with a Priest about this. You very well may need to petition for an annulment for your first marriage; but again, a Priest is better able to answer your question. God bless.

no it won’t prevent you from becoming Catholic, but it will mean that some groundwork must be done to regularize your marriage situation. The first step in that process is to investigate any former marriages, determine if you were married validly at that time, and then to look at your current situation. The place to start is with the Catholic pastor of the parish where you would like to study and worship. He will guide you in these steps. In general, the Catholic Church considers marriages contracted by non-Catholics to be valid, until proven otherwise. So objectively, it would seem you are still married to your ex and so were not free to marry again, but that cannot be determined relevant to your personal situation until you lay all the facts out and a formal investigation is done.

I became Catholic at 30 to my wife who was raised Catholic. I was married previously by a retired judge. I had to go through an annulment process for the first marriage where they determined it was not a valid marriage. My wife and I eventually had our marriage recognized by the Catholic church and amazingly we received many blessings afterwards such as a greater knowledge and love of God and joy in doing His bidding.

Before that I had to go through the RCIA and then be baptized and confirmed. I was never baptized before and if I had the Catholic church probably would not have done a baptism for me since it is taught that baptism can only be done once. The whole RCIA thing was easy and actually left me as ignornat of Catholicism as i was before. But I have to admit that I was only going through the motions. So, the whole becoming Catholic thing was easy.

The annulment was a pain and I faught it but was blessed when i finally let God have control. The converting to Catholicism was easy but the transformation is work and ongoing.

***There are always varying circumstances with anyone married more than once. The best advice I can shsre is to visit your parish priest and be prepared to answer his questions.

As to joing the Church; yes you may and can. There could be an issue of elgibility to receive the Most Holy Eucharist, but my understanding is that Only Eucharist and Ordination might prove to be problematic?
