What kind of training does one go through to become an Extraordinary Minister of the Holy Eucharist? Is it one session, multiple? What is covered?

Thanks!

I really believe it depends on the parish and diocese. In my parish, those that control the EMHC “program” quietly invite their croonies to join with little or no training – otherwise it’s a closed ministry. This is not all that frequent though because the same people seem to serve in all the “sanctuary-based” ministires around here so there is rarely a replacement. I don’t believe there is even any formal installation by the pastor or bishop.

In other parishes/dioceses, people are very well trained and they serve for a defined length of time, and they are actually installed into their ministries for a specified lenth of time (usually 1-3 years) though a ceremony with the bishop.

From what I’ve seen apparently not much. Here in San Diego, at least in the Masses I’ve been to, they all do different things, everyone approaches the job differently and kind of does their own thing.

our Diocese has recently established a Lay Ministry institute. All those laypersons with a role in service of the liturgy were the first to be invited, first for a basic Catholic doctrine course, which everyone takes, then to a course for their ministry-EMHC, parish liturgy committee, music etc. All EMHCs are supposed to be trained through this program but of course only about half the parishes are complying. The worst are those who say “I have been doing this for years, I don’t need any training” who of course are the very ones responsible for a lot of the abuse of this ministry that abounds.
