Becoming Eastern Orthodox, catholics just approve?

I believe you, I also believe we are splitting hairs here. I read what the Pope said at the joint declaration, “it was unfortunate we were unable to drink from the same cup”

That’s a good witness to the faith of the Primacy, As to the “Liturgy of the Eucharist,” he did participate in the consecration. Basically the Pope in his action said there could be communion, but their isn’t. Thus; “it was unfortunate we were unable to drink from the same cup” Sounds therapeutic to me.

“The Patriarch’s participation in the Eucharistic liturgy”

Well, off the top of my head I would say the ecumenical canons. But hey, if the party line has it they didn’t concelebrate I’m cool with that. Its not only the ewtn sights though, its CAF and a few others though. No problem I get the picture now.

Peace, Merry Christmas

As others have said, the EOs are in schism with us. Why doesn’t he become an Eastern Catholic? They are in communion with Rome.
With all due respect to my Catholic brothers and sisters, the “externals” (liturgy, icons, etc.) might not be the only thing that drives someone to convert from Latin Rite Catholicism to the Eastern Orthodoxy. Perhaps these people have misgivings about the papacy, or some other doctrine?

It’s been said many times, but it bears repeating: Eastern Catholic does not equal Eastern Orthodox in communion in Rome.

I don’t know what my Catholic brethren would say about it, but I am perfectly fine with someone converting to Eastern Orthodoxy. It’s too conservative and traditional for me, but I think it’s as valid a way of being Christian as Protestantism and Catholicism are.

And speaking just for myself, as an Episcopalian Anglo-Catholic, there are some EO insights I’ve imported into my belief structure.

I understand that some people hold this position, so I will clarify that this is the Orthodox perspective on the matter.

Christ is Born!

It isn’t about smells and bells for a lot of people. Anyone who sees Orthodoxy as some refuge from the Liturgical chaos and problems of praxis that have plagued the Latin Church are in for a rude shock. The mentality is different, and that becomes quickly apparent the deeper one goes.

With that said, there are many reasons why one would choose to 'switch sides."

Roman Catholicism is quite logical, and quite sound…HOWEVER, it hinges and depends on one thing: That the Pope is who he claims to be and has the power he claims to have.

If Faith in that is destroyed, it all collapses like a house of cards. The Papal Arguments are well argued (many have been convinced by them) but they aren’t bullet proof. The worst thing to do would be to try and guilt someone into staying. People are on their own Spiritual Journey…Pray for them, but don’t tell them that…as NIKE says, Just Do It. Saying you’ll pray for someone in that context is a blow to the face, not an act of brotherhood.

Leave your friend in God’s hands. I certainly am not saying that because I’m Orthodox. I would say the same about an Orthodox becoming a Latin. Beating someone over the head or using the risk of hellfire is not the way to go about it.

I’m not seriously thinking of converting at all. I’m just saying that I did years ago. I already went to confession for that years ago too when it happened. I was just wondering if people would say it wouldn’t have been a big deal for to have converted back then.

As for my friend, he told he went to an Eastern Rite Liturgy and the blogger has too, but they still want to become Eastern Orthodox.

I don’t understand why. But the biggest complain is other Catholics encouraging people to leave the Catholic Church. It makes it awfully hard if people see that maybe it’s not that big of a deal to try to tell them, hey you’re leaving the arc of salvation if you do that and you will go to hell unless God gives you a special grace to make a perfect act of contrition at death. I believe that and I think I am backed up by Church teaching, but no one acts like this is the case anymore. It’s hard to blame my friend for thinking he would not be condemned by other Catholics.

Anyone can claim what the Pope claims, but no one else would be taken seriously if they did.

What I mean is, that the Authority of the Pope is what holds your Ecclesiology together. Take that away and you are left with…well, Orthodoxy. 😃

I was only making a point that even those who disagree with what the Pope claims will only take the Pope seriously with such a claim. 🙂

It sounds like their issues are doctrinal, not disciplinary. That’s a bit tougher to deal with. I suggest you ask them what their beef is with Catholic doctrine, and try to bring them back in line with Church teaching. There are myriad tracts here on CA that answer almost all objections to Catholicism, and there are plenty of other apologetics resources out there. I suggest Dave Armstrong’s blog:
socrates58.blogspot.com/?m=1
And Matt1618’s blog:
matt1618.freeyellow.com

I haven’t the slightest idea why Catholics would encourage others to leave the Church. 🤷

I would say that Schism is no small thing. Anyone who treats it that way are people who aren’t serious about the Faith in general.

I say both encouragement and condemnation are wrong at the outset. Entrust them to God’s Mercy. We all have our own Souls to tend to.

Perhaps they don’t view it as “Leaving” but coming into the fullness of the Church. Latins do not own the word “Catholic.”

Beating them over the head with Latin Apologetic Essays is the quickest way to not get the result you intend.

First off, I can just as easily say that Greeks do not own the word “Orthodox.” Secondly, Catholics believe that the fullness of the Church is found in the Catholic (you would probably say “Latin”) Church.

When did I suggest “beating them over the head”? I recommended two apologetic sites, which were a great help in equipping me to defend my faith, to the OP in case he/she was ill-equipped to do so.

Besides the CAF rule that says a non-Catholic can’t proselytize Catholics perhaps there should be a rule that a non-Catholic shouldn’t ridicule us for encouraging another Catholic to stay Catholic.

“Asking them what their beef is” and “Trying to bring them back in line” is a recipe for conflict. As shown by the numerous closed threads on this forum, The risk for escalation is high.

That is the only point I was trying to make.

I just assumed people would know it is a serious thing to leave the Catholic Church, but no one I have encountered seems to think so except for apologetic minded people on sites like this.

I don’t know what the blogger’s doctrinal beefs are. As for my friend, his are that he wouldn’t be condemned for leaving so he might as well leave. He doesn’t like Pope Francis and considers him as a heretic. (HIS WORDS not mine!) He thinks that if Pope Francis is like this, then he should leave the Church bc the Church must have been wrong all along. I tried to tell him that a Pope being a heretic isn’t the issue that should make him leave, but only if the Pope teaches something wrong ex cathedra etc. He wasn’t convinced…

Those are both common English expressions which in no way connote militancy.
