Hello everyone, I have a pretty serious issue and I am hoping this is the right place to post this.

I have had a huge problem the last few years (though it’s really come to a head in the last 3 months) with masturbation and pornography. I was strictly against any kind of porn and masturbating throughout most of my teen years (I’m in my 20’s now) and while I still believe they are horribly wrong, over time I’ve slipped up and it’s become a terrible habit.

What concerns me even more than this sin that I can’t seem to stop committing is that I am growing less and less “sorry” every time I do it. I know it’s wrong, I know I should feel bad but I don’t feel quite as bad every time I fall back and now it has come to the point where instead of slipping up once a month, it may be multiple times in a day. I don’t feel the profound sense of guilt I used to and that scares me. In fact, I barely feel any guilt at all.

It’s called into question everything I believe and I am feeling horrible about this. Can anyone give me some guidance during this crisis of faith I am having? How can I regain my conscience so I can feel guilt that may help me stop this?

PS I have been confessing this sin when I commit it but the confessions also feel a little less sincere and that I do feel guilty about.

I know what you mean! I am still recovering myself. It is hard to stop. And you are right, after sometime you do get numb to it. You can get feeling back by getting yourself help. It sucks I hate it. And if you truly feel like that after confession don’t. Satan is trying to make you feel like that, he loves to see you suffer. Especially when you are in Gods Grace. Do not get discouraged.

Now, you can not stop masterbation on your own. Well… you can but it is very hard. You need to seek professional help. I had to. Seek out a phycologists first. Most of the time masterbation happens because of a type of subconscious suffering, and masterbation can temporarily fill that in. But it doesn’t forever. So get a phycologists to help you discover some of your problems.

Next, seek out a pornography rehad. Yes, they exist. Go look the nearest one up on the internet and call with them to possibly enter their program. You can actually participate in it at home. It may take sometime, but it helps.

I hope this helps. God bless!

Praying for you.

Years ago, I was in such darkness, and your words ring so true. It is as if your intellect and will are weakened to the extent that you are no longer the true “you” that you once were, but something else… Something you hate.
When you think about it, this is exactly what Satan is looking for.
But in your weakness, God is stronger. I know that it was Our Lady who pulled me through my own personal hell, and finally finding a confessor who “slapped me out of my silliness” so to speak.

When I look back at that time, it’s like I see this long dark tunnel that I was walking through, and finally got out of. I’m still no saint, believe me, but those shackles of sin that had me bonded to evil are no longer there. I pray for perseverance that I don’t go back and I pray for all who are in any kind of darkness right now, that they seek the Light of Christ, who is their way to truth.

When you are in the darkness, you can get to the point where you don’t even believe in God. You think it’s all a sham to keep you away from the things that bring you pleasure. That the church is archaic and antiquated and unnecessary.

When you finally get into the light, you find that all to be the biggest lie. That this (the church, God, sin) is all real. Too real sometimes!

God bless you for reaching out. I know your words ring true for many. And many will pray for you, today.

If prayers and confession help you, then keep it up! But , (depending on how “darkened” you are), I would also suggest finding many hobbies (ones that do not interfere with your faith) and talking to people that are in similar situations :D. I, myself, have looked at porn when I was younger, but , being busy with school ,drawing , listening to music , writing/reading and having many interesting arguments with my religion teacher (:D) , I just stopped looking at it and it also became very boring and disturbingly stupid . But, that might not be your case, sadly. 😦

I suggest you meditate on the reasons why masturbation is wrong and on the virtue of chastity itself. There’s too much to quote here but you should probably start with a prayerful reading of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, paragraphs 2337 through 2354 and following.

Examine all the ways you sin against the virtue, not just masturbation and pornography but near occasions of sin as well.

When you go to confession, do you thoroughly examine your conscience, taking into account all the virtues which will help you to overcome sin? A wonderful examine can be found at familyland.org/LET/fireofmercy/Downloads/327-177ExamineInteriorLife.pdf or, for the seven deadly sins start at home.catholicweb.com/stmarysbigriverreligioused/files/SEVEN_CAPITAL_SINS_Beginners.pdf.

You must seek professional help from a therapist and/or priest; it appears you have an addiction. God bless you.
